You'd have thought that missing from 20m straight in front in the first quarter of the prelim last year might have been the catalyst for Mayne to find his way back to his dead eye dick days but sadly not. His goal and field kicking are atrocious.

I had more confidence in Ian Baker-Finch during his 'yips' phase than I do in Chris Mayne with ball in hand.

Mayne had zero tackles on the weekend and missed some absolute sitters on goal, and sadly these have become a trademark of his game for the past few seasons. He may be a defensive forward but his job is to still kick goals when given the opportunity. He is not a soft target, he is simply not consistent enough with his performance to warrant a game week in week out. Give me Breust any day of the week. If Mayne had matched Bruest's output of 52 goals last year we would have upped our season average points kicked per game and in the process put our selves in with a better shot of winning the grand final.

Bruest Goals 2015 - 52
Mayne Goals 2015- 28

Bruest Tackles 2015 98
Mayne Tackles 2015 122

Bruest Kicks 2015 196
Mayne Kicks 2015 136

Bruest Marks 2015 94
Mayne Marks 2015 107

Using totals when Breust played more games is misleading. You're better than that.

Mayne had the same number of effective disposals a game, nearly 2 more tackles a game. Breust is probably the best player at his position, which is why it's an interesting comparison. I would take Breust as well.

But you don't get Breust. You get our Peel players. So, if Mayne is 90%the player Breust is, then who is the Peel player who is better than that?

Oops I assumed he just played the grand final as an extra game. My mistake. Apologies.
Im not saying there has to be a like to like swap for Mayne for a player from Peel. I believe our team is flexible enough to put someone else in Maynes position and have someone from Peel step up into the other players spot. Who that is, remains for Ross to decide. Yes I agree Mayne's tacking pressure is very good, but for every good tackle there is the deflating miss at goal which invariably is very gettable. Its been my argument for ages that we cannot continue to reward poor performances without consequences, unfortunately, that notion is very rarely enforced.

Mayne would be better served playing off half back I think. he knows how to compete in the air, he is relatively quick off the mark and he can tackle. Or put him on the wing. But he is becoming a liability in front of goals. Worse than casboult from carlton.

I don't think it is all doom and gloom but I do feel it is time for some fresh blood in the side. They can't go whack and play them all at the same time. But we need to get game time into the likes of collins, blakely, langdon, grey and a pearce for starters. When apeness can prove his fitness I will be keen to see him back in action, especially if he can pinch hit in the ruck.

It wouldn't hurt mayne, or barlow to go back to peel and spend some time to get some confidence up. Barlow back at peel will hurt my fantasy team, but I'm prepared to cop a whack for that if it means freo improves.

If Mayne continues his poor Kicking on goals . then he must be replaced by either Bennell ,Yarran or Crozier,

He has until one of them is ready to play , I think Mayne is a great person that has done alot for the club but I'm over him missing set shots.

No use Mayne being a defensive forward if the rest of the forwards aren't kicking goals either.

I started watching the game again more closely this morning before work. The structures were all over the place, especially in the backline. How many times was Sutcliffe out of position (in fact most the back line), where Freo were caught out. As much as we mention how important Sandi is to the team, I think just as big a loss at this point is McPharlin. When Johnson was missing from the game, there was no level head or on field general to get the backline into position in that first quarter. Which makes me wonder what SCOS did to not get in the 22 last week....

SCOS was left out because Ross did not want to go in to the game too tall down back. It's players like him I feel for because they are continually stuffed around by the club. He has definitely earned his stripes, showed tremendous loyalty and should be played ahead of Sutcliffe or Sheridan.
We have a number of ageing veterans on our list and some of them will retire at the end of this year due to age others may well give the game away due to injury (M.Johnson already missed round 1 with a calf issue). If we lose too many over a short period of time (lets say Pav were to retire mid season, and Johnson succumbed to injury) then we will be forced to play those young guys all at once with little or no experience at AFL level. That would be us out of the 8 for two maybe three seasons. If their is a managed gradual replacement of those on our current 22 who are nearly at the end of their careers we can still be competitive and hold a spot in the eight. So find out now who can play and get rid of those who cant. Maybe the players from the game against Melbourne get a pass for that game and we play the majority again this week. But if they get smashed at home this week by another young running side then it is too hard to ignore that changes are required.

On the Mayne tackling stat, what is the point in tackling and winning a free if you can't convert the free on the score board or produce an effective kick to a team mate?? Flip side of the coin is why are we not delivering the ball effectively inside 50m to marking forwards who convert the mark into a score. When the bullies sent the ball inside their 50m I'm not sure I saw that many of their players tackling as so much as running past receiving the ball and converting. Who needs tackling when the ball goes through the big sticks?
Sorry I'll go back and chew my fingernails and be quiet now....

Id give the role to Ibbotson and play DeBoer as a defensive half fwd.

Id like to see Ethan Hughes get a go. Seems like the Ibbotson type. We could always do with another Ibbo. Also Langdon should come in this week.

You can talk about swapping this player with that player all you want but when your contested possession count is -43, not even Dangerfield or Ablett playing alongside will save you.

Skills were poor because the side was put under constant pressure. The tackle count was 17 to 7 in the 1st quarter (-10). The effort was not there and they paid the price.

If a similar lack of effort and desire is missing this week at home against an opposition with the longest trip in football, then we won't make the finals anytime soon.

I'm prepared to let Round 1 be a wake up call but if the same thing happens again on Sunday, it's time to get the chainsaw out.

You can't play to much youth if you want to be in contention at the end of the season.
If the premiership window is open then we have to stick with experience and rotate youth sparingly. Maybe get games into Weller but the rest will stay at Peel.
If the premiership window is closed then accept the next couple of years are written off and bring in the youngsters but Pav, Johnson, Sandi etc have to go. You just can't have it both ways.
