Round one isn't a time for panicking. What happens on the first weekend of the season isn't always an indication of things to come.

But the dangers signs are there for the Dockers. And also, I think, a model for the future.

Corporal I think Bradley is spot on with his assessment. The question is how do you bring these guys in without upsetting the apple cart too much. I reckon (for what its worth), Tanner Smith forward for Mayne and Alex Pearce back for Zac D ( that does not mean Zac does not play simply that he does not play KPP). Those two are interchangeable in their positions so straight up the team has some flexibility and a plan B if plan A is failing.
I would bring in Yarran for Ballas and I think you stick with Tab's (Pav only plays home games this year). Walters needs to play forward, no point in trying to turn goal kicking machines into mids when you have a stack of good ones that cant get a game. Blakely comes in for Barlow and Langdon comes in for Mazungu. Weller remains in the side where he is at the moment. Hannath plays second ruck when Griff or Sandi are out and Brady Gray replaces Clancy or plays off the bench. Sam Collins comes in for Sutcliffe or Sheridan. This should not have to happen all at once but something along these lines needs to happen in a controlled fashion before it is forced upon the team through retirement/injuries etc. We desperately need leg speed and guys who are getting older aren't going to get faster. It pains me to think that any of our current champions are approaching the point where they are done, but Freo can either be nostalgic in their outlook or build the next generation of champs now.

The only one that can't happen there bpurple is Tanner Smith as he's still on the rookie list.

Ahhh yes that old chestnut, well then if we get a long term injury (more a question of when than if) provided he is still being played forward and consistently scoring goals, he has to be elevated and played. Four years on the list and untried is just stupidity. Imagine if he was delisted picked up by another team and became a goal scoring machine. Having had him on our list for 4 years we would look like a bunch of amateur d**kheads.

Like Smith, the only time Hannath gets played is when there are multiple injuries.

Either they aren't good enough or difficult to trade.

Can someone draw a diagram to explain this part

"...I want to see Hayden Ballantyne and Michael Walters in the forward-50 rather than outside it, kicking it to where they probably should be."

Mmmmmmm and the line that's trotted out is that they have to wait their turn and then make the most of it. Hard to do in one or two quarters a game once or twice a year. Silvagni is the classic example, he is 29 and has grown old waiting for his turn. He always does what is asked of him and quite often has had to fill a key defensive post coming into finals with little to no AFL game time. That's a big ask and when the team fails he and a few others cop it in the neck whilst the chosen sons just go about being ordinary day in day out. Trying to stay positive but the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

Yes, Walters is the only forward who consistently finds or makes space to lead into. More importantly he leads hard and fast so the kicker can put the ball out in front of him. How many marks does Walters take at full stretch or diving forward, and compare that with our other forwards, who seem to always be waiting for the ball. Make Mikey do 2 jobs, sure, but make his second job the forward coach, instead of trying to make him become another midfielder. If he kicks 50 goals for the season, and teaches a couple of our other forwards to kick 30ish each we have our extra 3 goals a game.

Here is some food for thought, I was speaking with an ex Hawk chap the other week and we got to talking about bringing in new blood. He told me that when Hawthorn started playing Roughead and Buddy, neither had set the world alight playing for Box Hill but the coaching staff new they had potential and decided to get as many games into them early on as possible. He also said that initially Clarko was a massive worrier about defence and not a big fan of the all out attack style they now have. There were quite a few stalwarts and great players at the club that Clarko had to move on. Things can change but it is up to the Freo coaching staff to take a punt both on players and strategy and make them change.

So what you're saying is that all we need to do is draft two key forwards with pick 2 and 5 in the National Draft, and then give them time to develop. I wholeheartedly agree that would probably work.

Any idea on how we get pick 2 and 5 in the National Draft?

I reckon Hardie has nailed it. Should be about 5-6 changes this week, possibly more.

We have one free position on our senior list.

We could promote Smith without waiting for a long term injury. There are two reasons why we haven't done so - we're keeping that position open for Morabito and Smith isn't much good.

Four years in and still on the Rookie list tells you all you need to know. He did kick four goals (only one mark) on the weekend but Brett Peake managed five in the same game. Has had a string of injury problems but needs to stand up now.

Shane Yarran is probably 3-4 weeks away from playing WAFL let alone AFL. That knee injury he picked up in the WAFL Grand Final saw him miss the entire pre-season.

We all know that Roly won't gamble with a player who doesn't have an AFL pre-season under his belt. In 2013/14 Anthony Morabito put in a full pre-season and still had to play 11 games with Peel before getting a game with Freo.

Yarran probably won't appear in Freo colours in 2016, bar a token 'bye' game or some other catastrophic sequence of injuries. We probably picked him up to weaken Subiaco now that Peel is in finals contention mode.

Got to hand it to our recruiting division. They seem to zero in on players who have known injury concerns (Yarran, Balic, Gumbleton and Bennell) and players who unfortunately seem to break down as soon as they don the purple (Apeness and Smith).

Hopefully the Bennell injury isn't long term but those soft tissue injuries do tend to recur again and again.

Balic looks a real worry. He had surgery on his wrist three weeks ago (the third time in the past three years) and is probably a write off for this season.

Remember we used our second round draft pick for NEXT season (+ pick 56 last year) to secure Balic and Yarran.

Audible groan.

Morg's you have missed the point completely, Fyfe was not a top ten draft pick neither was Sandilands, but the then coaching staff had faith in the youngsters and fast tracked them, they did not languish in the twos for four years lose heart and get delisted to go back and play in some second tier state comp. We need to get games into our young players now before they have to take on teams at AFL level without the help of the more experienced players around them. As long as we are in the top eight we are not going to get high draft picks, that's just a fact.
First round picks are no guarantee of success anyway, take Carlton and Melbourne for example they have had an endless supply of first round picks that go no where or leave after you have developed them for two years, because they don't want to be constantly in the bottom/ struggling sides on the ladder.
We have plenty of talent in the twos they just need to be played.
