TOPIC: Recruiting(or not!)

I think the club has tried to recruit KP forwards for a long time: Tarrant Clark Cloke Franklin Schultz McCarthy and probably more.
Apart from Tarrant who was transformed into a reasonable back man all the others have used Freo for leverage for contracts.
I suppose Bond could have done more but he did try to land one.

The Dockers did actually land some forwards - Trent Croad and Tony Modra. One failure and one success. And Freo got done over with Trent he played well before Freo and after Freo but was well below capacity during his time at Freo. We paid huge for him and gave him back to Hawthorn for nothing.

Forget the past - we drafted a bloke to kick goals - he kicks lots of 'em - so where is Yarran? That's all he does, he kicks goals - just what we needed. Was he told he wasn't going to play as well?

Fyfe needs to play in a position where he is in a 1 on 1 contest. Up forward. He is being slaughtered by the opposition tactics of holding him in stoppages congestion, and just piling into him with knees and elbows after the contest. Go back to the future with "Rosses Paddock" and let him contest with 1 opponent within range of goal. It will be a winner. Walters, Ballas and co have the pace to get to the spilled ball ahead of anyone in the comp from 30-40 yards away.

Among the doom and gloom of Freos game comes some cheery news from our second team in the WAFL.

Peel had a good win over Old Easts on the weekend with our best players being the following:
Alex Pearce - Solid in defence all day, moved forward in the last quarter and kicked the two goals needed to win the game.
Jack Hannath - Dominated the ruck from the centre and around the ground all day 56 hit outs.
Ed Langdon - All class set up play with run and accurate kicking finished with 32 disposals
Matty De Boer - Ditto 34 disposals
Brady Gray - pressure monster and tackling machine, 12 tackles for the day.
Tanner Smith - now playing as a full forward at Peel, 4 goals straight.
Sam Collins - Big presence down back finished with 8 marks for the game.
Ethan Hughes and Connor Blakely were their usual solid selves with both gathering 20 plus disposals and helping to set up play.
It is time for some of these guys to be tested in the AFL and others to get a regular run in the Freo side.

Great report.
Don't think you can fit De Boer, Suban, Pearce & The Gu in the side as they're all too similar. Interesting how when they drop back to Peel they regularly pick up a bundle of possessions as free running midfielders but when they play in the seniors they are given a different role. Either defensive forward or blocker/tagger for Fyfe and other midfielders.
Rory's defensive mindset I guess.

Also, can a Sharks supporter tell us anything about their ruckmen? Do they have a recognised one or is this a weakness in their set up? Hannath's total seems extraordinary.

Our last top ten pick was Mora at pick 4 in 2009. Highest pick after that was Weller at 14 in 2014

Three other top 20s since 2009:
Josh Simpson at 17 in 2012
Apeness 17 2013
Sheridan 16 2011

Mora and arguably Simpson were bad luck but even so, I'm not sure where there gun ready-made KPPs are supposed to be coming from. These guys seem to go in the top 5.

You missed: Jayden Pitt (#20, 2010) and Hayden Crozier (#20, 2011).

You're right, the obvious KPP's go early in the draft, however, if you constantly draft midfielders you shouldn't complain when your KPP cupboard runs bare.

Our only hope of securing quality KPP's lies with trading them in, something we have been singularly unable to do, for a variety of reasons which we have debated ad nauseam for years.

I think Collins can be a key defender and he seems to have the maturity and determination to play in the big boys team now.. We need someone to play at CHB straight away. as while Johnson has been a great defender in the past, his body is not holding up and should be used sparingly.

Yeah, but why when try to recruit a kpp do we go for some high profile player who is going to cost us mega bucks and is often past it or not worth it?

Why not go for a couple of players with potential who would have cost less? Someone like Casboult. He's a great pack mark, something we don't have in our forward line now, but I know his kicking for goals is suspect. Surely you can work on this, plus he would have some excellent small forwards around him to feed it off to,
Did anyone look at or know anything about Zac Smith who Geelong picked up this year? Looked very good and Geelong claim they were just as happy with his game as Dangerfield's.

I agree jockstrap. You don't recruit mature age players unless you think they are ready to play. Collins, Pearce, Johnson, Sandi the obvious inclusions for me. Maybe find room for Deboer or Blakely as well.
What has happened to Muzungu? He is a shell of the player he was.

Still don't think the club did nearly enough work to try to keep Josh Simpson.

While there were some issues that kid would be starring for us by now.

A gun and a massive loss to the game.

Can't all be Roly robots.
