TOPIC: Recruiting(or not!)

Every season we here on D/Land go into the draft expecting us to recruit what we see that we obviously lack-big key position players and every year we come away feeling let down. You go through our senior list now and it makes for pretty sad reading.
We have 12 listed players that would be regarded as KPP's or ruckmen. I don't know whether that is a good proportion compared to other sides(hello Fre_Doh)or not but i do know the following...
Out of that 12, Pav, Johnno, Dawson, Sandi & Griff are aged between 30-34, plus Silvagni is 29. That's half our big men near retirement you would think as bigger players don't usually play as long as smaller midfield types.(Fletcher excepted)
After that we have a gap down to Clarke-26, Tabener-23, Hannath-24, Pearce & Apeness & Collins-21.
You look at that younger group.
Clarke-lots here reckon he should be used as a key forward. Let's be honest. IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN! He's had plenty of chances to show it and hasn't. For the last three years he's been mentioned in trade talks but still we persevere.
Tabener-this is going to be his breakout season according to a fair few here. I'd be happy for a bloody breakout game just to start with.
Pearce-definitely shows promise but we still can't even decide to play him as a backman or a forward so instead of letting him settle in one area we throw him around all over the shop.
Hannath-see Clarke above
Apeness-buggered his knee last year and is a long way from appearing in the seniors.
Collins-looked okay in pre season. Unproven.

There have been some interesting observations so far today. A couple i liked were-Silvagni won't get a game even if the whole backline was hit by a bus. Chuck him forward then and let him create some mayhem. He's at least more mobile than Clarke and Hannath.
Port recruited Dixon. This is my main point of annoyance and disillusionment. We have a huge gap of talented mid age tall players. Surely you recruit what you need, and that is someone to take over from our aging good big players. Our younger ones are either not good enough, injured or need more time to step up, which is a luxury we can't afford, so guys like Dixon or any other established WAFL, SANFL, VFL player should be worth a punt.
Say we do get Hogan next year, do we really think he can be the saviour, which judging by our recruiting is what we're expecting. And that's even if he does decide to return here.

When was the last time a young player came in and starred for Fremantle straight up? I know they're hard to find but Adams look mighty comfortable there today and we overlooked him of course.
Yes we finished high on the ladder which doesn't help but WB weren't near the bottom.

So after my rant I wonder if you were involved at the club and knew what you were doing, would you recruit so many midfielders who can't get a game, not trade any and not draft enough big men. If the answer is no, then why can we see it but our recruiting staff can't.

Phew!

If we had Hogan, McCarthy and Bennell roaming the forward half today we still would have lost. Our inability to move the ball efficiently cost us last year, and it's seems we went backwards today.

We do need key forwards (and backs) but the lack of them is not our biggest issue for mine.

All this talk about recruiting Dixon.
i. He wanted to go to Port...they were always his club of choice
ii. He only plays half a season...he is always injured.
iii. We put all our eggs in the basket chasing McCarthy and I didn't see too many Dockerlanders saying we should get Dixon over McCarthy then.

Like most teams, our best 22 fit and firing is as good as anyone's ( see the start to last year). But our lack of depth is exposed when we have injuries or omissions. Yesterday we were down on Johnson (AA), McPhalin (AA) and Sandi (AA) and Pav (AA) is sadly out of form or injured or too old. Four top flight talls from last year's team, none of whom have obvious replacements (with the possible exception of Griff).

We're reaping what Bondy couldn't manage to sow.

I would suggest it is hard to go to the negotiating table with the proposition that I will give you these 2 medium size guys who can't hit a target for your key forward.
Sorry everybody am starting to think that I/we have over estimated the ability of a lot of our players, as that effort yesterday lays solely with the players that took the field.
We have consistently had large parts of games where we have worked our guts out to have the ascendency and failed to convert that onto the scoreboard through basic skill errors. I agree that it is probably time to start giving extended runs to some of the younger guys down at Peel, because the guys getting a run each week don't appear to have the ability to stop this.
I hate to say this as these players are some of my favourites.

We are throwing a lot of blame at our disposal, but on a couple of occasions only yesterday did I see a player lead hard and fast to space. On both occasions the kick to him was nowhere near perfect, but it didn't have to be , as the player had a desire to get to the ball and space to adjust to the imperfect kick.

The player in question? Walters. He is the only player we have who identifies a space then times his lead to utilise it. Too many of our players drift into these spaces then wait for the ball to land on their head. A defenders dream. If a player under pressure knows he can kick for space and a couple of our forward/mids will be running hard to make that kick look good, he will be more inclined to take that risk instead of going sideways.

DoD - I did. Or at least - thorughout the trade period - I suggested that with Bennell and McCarthy both done deals, we should spend our time in trade targeting anyone of the 4 talls who were up for grabs, which included Dixon.

Bennell and McCarthy both indicated they wanted to leave, and they wanted to play for Freo. That meant we walk in, offer the bottom end of what could be considered reasonable, then walk out and continue working on the real coup of the trade period. We probably paid overs for Bennell, and nothing we had could have got McCarthy, so we were always relying on the mental health aspect. GWS rolled the dice on that and lost. Now we get him next year for virtually nothing. A fringe 22 player and a second round pick at most. Unless Bondy wants to throw away another first round pick on a done deal. Which he probably will.

RR, I think the essence of what Derby12's comment is not that we paid overs for player of Harley's quality, but we paid more than we had to. Here was a player chucked out by his club and unwanted by every other except us, who wanted to come to Freo. Surely we could have got him for less? It's not as if we had to get into a bidding war to get him.

We have been a blue collar side. Manic pressure and hard work have been our tools. Like it or not we have gone down a path of recruiting best player available at the draft which have been mids - especially where we have had a choice.
We don't value skill over effort and we reward hard work and team rules over skill. Most of our players are not overly skilled by foot or hand. We are generally a poor contested marking side. But we work bloody hard and that has got us a long way.
That has held us in games for over 4 years. Other sides have copied our hard work but now added skill.
It is only round one and we are not the only side too have our pants pulled down early in a season.
I would think if by round 12 we are away from the top four we should look at playing some of our youngster regularly.
Tanner smith has been on our list for 4 years it is time to see what he has. Sam Collins and Alex Pearce for Dawson and johno( yes johno) .
Give ed Langdon a descent go and don't renew for 2 more years Daniel Pearce.

Down On Down, recruiting Dixon was only an example of the type of player we should have recruited.
Yes, we put all eggs in the McCarthy and Bennell basket when they too were only ever going to come here. Once we failed with McCarthy we had nowhere to go. Experienced big men was what we needed but we recruited a couple of unproven youngsters, one on the rookie list even. Along with Tanner Smith who has been with us for four years and is still on the rookie list.
McCarthy would have been great but in reality he's even younger and less experienced than Tabener.
Bond and Lloyd actually spoke out in trade period that they weren't interested in Dixon, Casboult or anyone else whose names were being bandied about. Why? Because Bennell was going to kick 40-50 goals this year?
Oh yes, we were going to throw Fyfe forward. That's the Brownlow Medal winning midfielder we're talking about. Once you take him out of our midfield, we're pretty average, except Mundy and Neale, and it seems as if other teams midfields have now surpassed us. Hill of course is class, but he's more receiver, running type.
Look at Geelong's recruiting. Looked at their deficiencies and targeted players to fix it. Dangerfield to take the heat off Selwood, Henderson an experienced KP backman to assist aging backline and Smith to provide another big target besides Hawkins.
