A COUNTDOWN clock will be used when players are kicking for goal inside 50m during 2016 after a positive trial in the NAB Challenge.

Players have 30 seconds to begin walking in to take their set shot kick for goal, with spectators, players and umpires now able to watch time running down on the scoreboard.

Countdown clock in play for 2016 season

What is this for? Was it too hard for umpires to count to 30? Do they think people are so stupid that counting down is the most exciting thing that can happen to them?

Presumably if an umpire let a player have slightly more than 30 seconds then there were mitigating circumstances and they did it in the best interest of the game.

If you have a countdown clock, you can have a countdown clock sponsor.

Ka-Ching.

I'm only interested in this if the ball explodes when the countdown reaches zero.

As long as they don't use the stuff they put in the fireworks. Every time a ball exploded we'd be waiting ten minutes for the smoke to clear before play could resume.

The other concern I have is that they'll put the bloke in charge of the countdown button who previously did the substitute announcements. 15 minutes after the shot on goal the clock would start.

That is carp! When do they start the clock......after the player pulls his socks up or when he puts his mouth card in his shorts?

For a Fremantle player it's usually as the ball is kicked to him from the midfield.

Could we have umpires that light up (no, not ciggies) when they blow the whistle - with propeller heads or at least hats?

The count down clock is very American basketball. Why don't we have some guy with a hotdog cannon shoot the player in the eye with a hot dog if he fails to kick the ball in time. I bet that would speed him up next time around. A trained team of arse clowns wearing Gillon McGlaughlin masks could taunt him as he walked back to his position after failing the shot clock test. They would say hurtful things like " you cant count" and "your kicking skills are less than exceptional" and "you are a cad!". All very silly I know.
Get rid of the shot clock before it is even installed, let the umpires do their job and for jeezus's firkin mirkin leave the game alone.

The clock in basketball is functional. In Aussie Rules the only two people who need to know about the time are the umpire and the player kicking the ball and the 30 second limit is just a way of avoiding time wasting, it's not a function of the way the game is played. There's no need for it to be enforced consistently.

About time.

Now they just need to organise some trundle wheels for the umps when they are measuring out the 50m paid when the shot clock hits zero, but the Freo player tries to tackle the offending player before the ump has officially called play-on.

So, is play on when the clock reaches zero or when the umpire calls it? If you could enter the zone and run at the player when the clock hits zero it would make sense to me. If it still relies on the umpire calling play on it's just another bit of useless clutter, so why bother?

Ballantyne would wait until the clock reached 5 seconds, all the opposition players would look up at the clock and 'bang' he'd be off.

Why a clock? Why not just a drum beat that gets faster and faster before finishing with a clash of cymbals (and a cry of "Play on")? That way you can look at the player with the ball and know how urgent it is that he kicks it.
