TOPIC: Pick your team

In an effort to try and fit as many Freo players into my dream team as possible, I would like to know who you think will be in our best 22 Round 1 and going forward

Back - Sutcliffe, Dawson, Ibbo
Half Back - Spurr, Johnson, Sheridan
Mid - Hill, Neale, D.Pearce
Half Forward - Mayne, Bennell, Barlow
Forward - Walters, Pav, Ballas
Centre - Sandi, Fyfe, Mundy
Bench - Weller, Griffen, Tabener, A.Pearce

Not an easy task. I too would love to see Weller play every single week. He comes on and immediately has an impact every time. Players I have left out like Z Clarke, C Pearce etc could learn a lot by watching the way Weller goes about his business.

I thought both Tucker and Collins looked impressive and could/should get game time this year, as with Brady Grey who is ferocious in his attack and his shut down role on Wingard last year should see him play the small defender role for us going forward.

Trade/cut - Hannath, C.Pearce, Silvagni, Crozier, Suban.
Chris Mayne gets one more shot to start actually kicking goals...they are the tall sticks Chris!
I like Mzungu...but you cant fit em all in and yes he needs to work on his kicking.
Im sure Ive stuffed up so over to you to point out my errors :)

Team looks OK but I would start A Pearce and have Sheridan and Sutcliffe interchanging, with A Pearce going to CHB when 1st Jono is resting. We need our talls on the field in defence. I also think Bennell on a wing maybe and D Pearce at half forward flank, he likes to attack so put him there. Positions are a bit silly now anyway, as most players just run into a large blob around the ball when the ball is bounced, until it comes out one way or the other then its a foot race to the goals. I would also have Tabs at CHF and Mayne coming off the bench.

Here's how I hope it ends up by the end of season

Back - Sutcliffe, Collins, Ibbo
Half Back - Spurr, Johnson, A Pearce
Mid - Hill, Neale, D.Pearce
Half Forward - Yarran, Bennell, Barlow
Forward - Walters, Pav, Ballas
Centre - Sandi, Fyfe, Mundy
Bench - Weller, Griffen, Tabener, Blakely

Notes.
Danyle only just stays in.
It may be my misperception but some of the kids in waiting have better skills than much of our 3rd & 4th string players who all give great effort but aren't too consistent in the skill dept. and that;s where our biggest problem is.
Tabs also always gives great effort but what he does after getting the pill is touch & go. Could be replaced by Apeness later in the year.

Clancee, Crozier, Mzungu, De Boer, Silvagni, Clarke, Hannath to see Peel through to the finals in the WAFL.

No youngsters are really going to get a gig above the usual names. Bennell will come in sooner rather than later, as will A. Pearce.
Weller, Grey, Langdon, Tucker, Collins, not necessarily in that order, are the most likely after that, but two games each for the season.
I doubt we will see Yarran in anything but teal, if and when he resumes. Maybe recruiting Yarran was a way to ensure Peel play finals.

Genius I was hoping for that team not for a minute thinking it'll come about though.

Yarran has real ability but it's unknown if he can make those skills work at AFL level. I hope so because he if he could do at least some of what he was able to do at WAFL level he'll go along way to fixing our forward problems.

IMHO you guys have all gone too tall on the bench. with the reduced rotations the talls will be spending 90% time on the ground. so here's my starting line up.

Back - Spur, Dawson, Ibbo
Half Back - Hill, A.Pearce, Johnson,
Mid - Bennell, Neale, D.Pearce
Half Forward - Mayne, Tabener, Walters,
Forward - Griff, Pav, Ballas
Centre - Sandi, Fyfe, Mundy
Bench - Weller, Sutcliffe, Barlow, Sheridan

easy to see any of these on the bench for those named above:
Muz, Suban, De Pig, Blakely, Mora (once fit), Grey,

other possible swaps are the obvious Yarran for Mayne, Apeness for Tabs, Collins for Dawson (although we all know this will only be through injury).

depth players/trade bait (should anyone need them)
Zac C, Hannath, Crozier, Silvagni, Clancee,

Developing players
Balic, Tucker, Hughes, Langdon.

Here's my ideal six fwds: Bennell, Fyfe, Yarran, Ballantyne, Pav and Taberner.

But what's more important is how close they are allowed to play to the goals.

Bennell kicked 4 goals and was one of Peel's best.

Do you think they could skip the hollow cliches and the conservatism misplaced as wisdom and just play him for round 1 ?.

He's probably our second best player. Or do you act your way in and act your way out....bla bla bla

You play your best if they are available. Bennell appears ready and available ....he should play Rd1. He's the 2-3 goal ala Cyril X factor we've been desperate to get.....play him.

This is bloody difficult. De Boer, Sutcliffe, Zac C, Clancee, Weller, and of course the perennial Silvagni - I'd like them all to get a guernsey.

Mzungu can play when he can hit a target.. Can't fault his effort, but until then If I had to pick between mzungu and weller, I would take weller.

The only way I can see Chris Mayne in our best 22 is if he starts kicking goals. 10 tackles a game is great.. except that if you are supposed to be playing a key forward type role you need to be kicking goals..
