Clancey, Mzungu or Suban will be handy when needed against some of the bully boys of the comp. Not all 3 in the one side, but 1 or 2 will be useful. Zac Clarke has had his chances and 10 minutes of class every few weeks shouldn't cut it. ( I have believed in him for too long). Mayne is talked about for his forward line pressure, but we have other players offering more alongside their forward pressure, and if he cant get his dead-eye goalkicking back on track early this season, he will be gone too.

It seems some supporters want all the new recruits in the 22 on match day but cant bring themselves to drop any of the incumbents. 36 into 22 does not fit with the AwFL laws of the game. The way Bennell clicked with Mikey, D Pearce and Hilly was a delight to watch and should be sending shudders of apprehension up the spine of every opposition player and coaching panel.

If Yarren can slot into the same groove, Fyfe, Neale and some of the young guns coming through could have a field day as opposition defences turn themselves inside out trying to stop the unstoppable.

It kept breaking down once we got the ball into the forward line again. There were plenty of speculative bombs from midfield into the forward 50, but these didn't seemed aimed at a marking target - they usually went to a pack - and/or it was chaos once the ball hit the ground.

I understand the need to move the ball into the forward line rapidly so the defence doesn't have a chance to get back, but we need to be more clever and accurate moving the ball to forwards who are the other side of their defenders.

In previous pre-seasons - which are often haphazard, and anyway, you can't win a flag in March and it's no real indication - but there were some specifics we needed to improve in, and after that Cats game, there was a sinking deja-vu about this. Delivery and ball use in the final 50.

Lachie Weller might have elite hair, but he's also an elite deliverer of the ball by foot - surely he's ready to play most games this season. I don't know what the other new blokes like Blakely are like in the kicking dept.

So glad to see Bennell in the purple - once he's properly linked in with the others, look out.

Hey charger! Part of that problem you mention in he first paragraph isthat we don't really have any real marking targets in our forward line. A 34 yr old is still our best option. After that we have a rubber chest, some slow ruckmen and more dangerous smaller players.

If you genuinely believe Lachie Weller will be a walk up start and play most games this season you are going to be seriously disappointed.

Yes the kid is a rare talent and yes one day he will be a star...one day.

Coming on late in a NAB Challenge game, on a hot day, when most other players are out on their feet, you would expect him to impress with his turn of foot. Which he did.

At this stage of his development he does not have the tank to sustain the effort for four full quarters. The reduction in interchange numbers (and no sub) will mandate a player must have that ability, especially someone playing for Freo.

Weller, Blakely and Langdon are going to spend a lot of their season at Peel.

Time to watch Groundhog Day again...it's too early to howl at the moon.

Generally what you say there Fre_Doh is an 100% accurate appraisal of the situation regarding youngsters getting a go. I do think though that what Weller offers the side in skill, polish and speed they'll be willing to give him more leeway and opportunity to succeed.

It's a lot simpler and quicker to improve kicking skills via personnel changes than it is through training.

Likewise I agree with your appraisal ROTV.

However, we are Freo FC and we don't gamble.

Roly has shown time and time again that he wants miles on the clock rather than speculate on pure talent.

Hell he's saying that Bennell is no certainty for round 1 and insisting he play WAFL this weekend.

It'll take a very poor start to the season or a disastrous run of injuries for those kids to get a regular game this season.

Got the Tuesday blues FreDoh!
You're forgetting that this year we get Ross the Boss Vers 2.0 He got upgraded in the off season by Bondy.
As long as it's not a Beta version all will be fine at FFC.

I'll end up eating my words during the season proper but I think we might see Ross experiment a bit more this year.
As they say if you stand still you go backwards in this game. 10 games minimum for L.Weller this year.

Did we remember to upgrade Bondy in the off season?

Games night at Roly's place:
Roly: "I'm thinking of putting a second house on Old Kent Road".
Bondy: "Crazy! You put one there two hours ago."
Roly: "I said I was THINKING about it. Maybe in another hour or two..."

I dunno Fre_Doh, I'd say they've signalled their intentions with Weller and have the hotel already on Old Kent Road and won second prize in a beauty contest to boot.

Fair bit of doom and gloom on here saying it is just a repeat of last year. That is little bemusing given that we finished top of the table. Sure, we want to win the big win, but it wasn't exactly an unmitigated disaster last year, was it?

We ended the last race with a little crumple in the front end and limped to the finish line. Like a slide in the wet into that stop sign. Nothing permanent. A few (actually only one) new panels, a paint job and new shockies. Yeah we changed the mechanics too. The test drive was passable. We've ordered in some new tyres but they look like they will be late arriving. Just get this thing on the road and we'll make adjustments as necessary. Plenty of spares in the boot.

Mellors, you've identified a change at Freo. Once we were happy to be in the mix, to maybe have a shot at finals. Now nothing short of a top 2 finish will make us happy. As supporters, we are becoming like those at some other club I'd rather not mention...
