He did a half time talk at a function I was at and the same question was asked. The reason behind it is for Zac Clarke and Griff to get more practice together. Sandi said he was fit and injury free.

Well, all I can say is the game was destined to be flushed down the dunny before that Danyellering bloke stepped up and shot a cannon from outside the 50 - then all hell broke loose and everyone started firing their rifles. Good on that Pearce fella, nothing like having someone who wants to win.

Ross must've come done from the coach's box again.

larkin, I thought de Boer might get another run in the midfield, like he did for a few quarters late last season. It's true, though: I don't think there's room for both Mayne and de Boer doing the "pressure forward" thing anymore, even if their roles were always a bit different. At least Mayne looked (again, going only by the stats) to be at least attempting to be as much a scoring forward as a pressure forward this game. It's likely that he realises as much as anybody that there's a Yarran ready to take his spot as soon as his knee is right.

I'm sure Sandi appreciated the chance to avoid 5 or 6 cats trying to scrag and maul him in a nothing game. He gets enough of that when the season proper starts, and doesn't need the practise.

SS I'm just trying to read the tea leaves. And RM was probably on the mark saying (earlier) blokes like Weller might only get a taste this year - as they harden up.

Both teams looked to be going pretty hard in the first quarter, after the sun had sucked the very life juices out of them it became more like a intra club match. Then Cockatoo bird brain decided he would like to miss the first two games of the season and buried 1st Jono into the turf. This flipped switch which Geelong really had no answer for. So I think at the start of each game a player needs to be sacrificed to the opposition to get the red mist rising.

I thought Z Clarke needed to play a better game. I think there is a chance he may be suspended for Round 1, which is really really poor considering Sandi is already out. Luckily the Bulldogs don't have any ruckmen.

I attended the game on Saturday. My observation summary,

Nothing much different from last year. Terrible handling and kicking errors that cost us dearly when turned over.

When put in context after watching how clean the Hawks were in the following game, it could well be determined that we just don't have the depth of talent despite the willing.

If we can take our chances (easy chances) we can kill games off. If we allow good teams who can kick goals (Toast/Hawks) to move the ball easily up the middle ground, it's going to be tough (obvious I know)

Completely disagree with thoughts about holding Weller back. He's absolutely ready and hungry.

Impressed by the space Harley made for himself, have not seen that from a Dockers target man for a while. He's an absolute find for us, hopefully he'll get the service.

Sutcliffe has no clue.
Dawson has the passion but his going to get murdered by the big men this year.
How many punches does a player have to take before it warrants AFL intervention? The attention Fyfe is having to deal with is beyond context of the physical allowance of the game. AFL surely have some sort of duty of care to nip this in the bud?

Cockhead-2 should get min 4 weeks.

Tabs - Not good enough.

Pav - May be wishing he'd hung em up.

I'm a pessimistic drama queen.

Cockatoo has been offered 2 weeks, which seems about right to me. Just as long as it is consistently applied for the real season (or at least until a Hawk does it).

Pessimistic perhaps Pommiefarmer but probably on the money. Looks like last year with a bit of a boost from Bennell. Surely time to try some alternatives to Mzungu, Sutcliffe and Taberner, preferably players who can kick. Why hold back Weller, Blakely, Grey and Langdon. The selectors (aka Lyon) are too conservative. Also, it's a pity Yarran wasn't fit enough to be given a run.

Bennell was good for a first game and hot conditions but I don't think he got out of third gear. Must say PF that's a pretty drastic summation this early in the year. I mean its not like Geelong were supreme with there ball handling skills. I got the feeling during yesterdays game there was still some tinkering and experimentation going on as far as transition goes. The boys really turned it on in the last ten minutes and as I said before the cats just could not go with them.
Watched the West Coast Toilet yesterday and they looked impressive, but that tends to happen when you are playing a bunch of witches hats painted red and black.
Just like last year and the year before that etc.... the experts have us tumbling to between 4 and 8 on the ladder most of them see us at six. These are the same experts that did not see us finishing top last year or the toilet making the GF. The truth is until about round 8 no one really knows its just guess work. As for our scoring, in 2013 in the second half of that seson Freo were the best at getting the ball into the 25m arc in front of goals. All would agree the more shots you have from there the better your scoring ratio will be.

Did anyone read the article about Jesse Hogan today? Seems he is struggling with his goal kicking, maybe we should hold off before we throw the kitchen sink at getting him across. Only managed two goals on the weekend and missed a number of easy set shots as well as dropping easy marks. Poor old Hoges is copping it in the press over east. He has averaged 2 goals a game in the NAB Challenge.
As for our man Tabs he also has averaged two goals a game in the pre season, if he continues that form in the regular season he will net 46 majors. If that turns out to be the case do we stick with Tabs or chase a similar player because the media fawn all over them because of their awesomeness? If he does maintain his two goal average that would put him on par with most of the key forwards running around and just behind guys like the Elite hawks forwards who are kicking 45 to 50 a season. I'll take that, maybe Ross is on to something.

Tabs is 22, and has plenty of upside. He does have a go and is prepared to get in and stick up for teammates who have copped a cheap shot. I thought he was ok on Saturday. I would take him over Clarke (Z) any day.

The comments about the $h!tmixers Fyfe cops behind the play are on the money, and when it happens to a "genuine superstar ball-player" all hell is let loose among the media suckholes. Being a Freo player, no one will notice except us.

I still think that giving Weller, Langdon and Blakely a spell each every 3 or 4 weeks will only be good for them. The chance to go back to the WAFL and reinforce the lessons they learn in the big time will be the best learning curve they can get. Lachie Neale is the perfect example of how well that process can work.

Oh and given the worries about our scoring potential this year, I can only assume that the Herald scribe hit the wrong buttons on his calculator when working out the percentages.

Clancey was all at sea , Mzungu no skills, Suban ALWAYS goes to his right when dodging a tackle - oppositions have worked him out - Clark Z has no promise going forward , and whilst Maine tries hard the game has gone past him.

Compare those guys to Weller, Blakely, Landgon, A Pearce, Darcy Tucker, Ethen Hughes and Brady Gray....its no contest as we now need guys who can run all day and kick truly. Roly is rolling the dice to an extent about changing his game plan - from structured defence and defensive forward line to a side that can break lines with run and kick. No point in doing a new plan with the same ole crew.

You know it makes sense!!
