Yeah, and then this happened: www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/afl/teams/p...b66d4001b8b7e53e3ce6

ADELAIDE Oval’s new stadium deal — that was to pump an extra $3.1 million to the Crows and Power this year — has achieved its first win on the AFL clubs’ balance sheets. For the first time since 2007, both the Adelaide and Port Adelaide football clubs will post profits.

Revenue sharing can be altered at the stroke of a pen. All parties would have learnt from Adelaide Oval. Building a $1B stadium (at least) is a generational decision, which has been butchered in this state. In part, it was allowed to be butchered because the WACA / WAFC were even more short-sighted and stubborn than their counterparts in Adelaide.

Besides, what was the alternative for South Australia? Would you have preferred an entirely new stadium? If you were the SANFL, what would you have done? Did you ever go out to Football Park? Do you think the people of Adelaide wish they could still watch AFL games in that outer, and only fit in 20,000 for BBL games?

I read that article and it just sounded like a mix of sour grapes and doom and gloom.

Comments like this are particularly over the top:
"We need the state government to progress discussions on how to preserve football's financial future as the sport now has no certainty for its future.

Really - football has no certainty for its future?

The reality is a Company won a fair tender process against another Company. Welcome to the world of business WAFC!

Wasn't it the SANFL that made all the decision making on the shizenhaus that is Football Park? Like building it in swampland, reducing seating (due to getting rid of the spartan benches for proper seats) and letting it run down to white elephant status?

And that's all that is happening, Morgan. You've invented some notion of failure.

Instead of the management duties remaining in house, with all the profits going back to WA football, an interstate management company will take a slice out of the profits. Presumably under the notion that the Stadium Australia mob can generate more revenue than the WAFC can.

So the WAFC and the AFL have to negotiate a good stadium deal, just like every other club has to.

Their first step is to make the point that they already have a long term lease at a functioning stadium.

Adelaide Oval is managed by the Adelaide Oval Stadium Management Authority (AOSMA), a joint venture of SACA and the SANFL. The WAFC is complaining that it isn't managing Perth Stadium. My point is it was open to them to be proactive and it could have secured a role for itself.

The collateral damage is that Western Australians will spend way over the odds for a stadium in an inferior location than either Subi or the WACA.

That's down to the democratically elected government of those Western Australians.

"functioning" being the critical yet feebly limiting word in a negotiation there, Shane.

Apparently our credit rating is now lower than Tasmania, I hope our new Stadiium has better seats and pies than Aurora Stadium.

From Morgan's latest article, the key issue for the idle observer...

Meanwhile the Tourism Council of WA threw its support behind the decision to award Stadium Australia Operations the management contract.

The New South Wales-based consortium operates Stadium Australia, which hosted the 2000 Olympics, in Western Sydney.

"What Perth needed was a stadium operator that could bring in the big international acts ... and they have the ability to do that," Tourism Council of WA chief executive Evan Hall said.

"It would have been concerning if the operator of the stadium went to any one sporting code, because this is not about one particular sport."

Yep. That's one way the WAFC and WACA missed out. Had they combined forces and attempted to control the process, they could have had more say on they way the venue was used.

Think about the outrage on here when a Rugby Test was going to trump an AFL final at Subi. Well, get used to it. Oh, U2 concert might dig up the turf? Too bad.

The one thing no-one has said about Stadium Australia is how good the turf is.

Barnett cares about return on his (poor) investment, and that means catering to interests outside cricket and football; because, after all, they are still going to play there. But Barcelona, well, they can play an exhibition anywhere in the world.

I still don't understand why you're involving the WACA.
