So Essendon have to be able to field a team. When Freo, as alluded to by BP were down to 30 players to pick from, and for 2 or 3 weeks, 23 or 24 players to pick from (a couple of those were under suspension) no-one was calling for Freo to get priority picks.

Essendon are NOT being punished in this case, the players are being punished. The players are probably not going to use performance enhancing drugs again. But nothing that has happened so far has been a disincentive to Essendon to go in for the next undetectable lot of gear to hit the market. The NRL got it right with the Melbourne Storm. (who incidentally came out with the same "we did nothing wrong" defense that Essendon threw up)

Fremantle were given special permission to elevate Casey Sibosado and Joel Houghton from the rookie list.

From the rookie list, not from a pool of recently out-of -contract players.

Essendon not punished? Hello? They've lost most of their decent players, the coach is has left in disgrace, half its members won't be signing up, its reputation is trashed, the club is financially whacked, and everyone is wondering if they will win a game all year.

This may be appropriate but they have certainly copped it in the neck.

Folks it may appear I am being bloody minded about this but lets put a couple of things in to context. Australia as a sporting nation has always taken the moral high ground when it comes to doping in sport. Our various sporting bodies are the first to condemn, criticise and judge the country/individual caught. We also make it known loud and proud that we support the various anti-doping codes, organisations etc.
What we are talking about here with Essendon is not just one or two or even a small group of players but almost an entire playing group, coaching staff and administration who have broken a code they signed up to. Having taken so strong a position on anti-doping in the past, how can a sport that professes to be the premier sporting code in our country effectively let the players take the fall? Particularly when their stance from the outset was to protect and act in the best interests of the players. The coach who has left in disgrace has also walked away with a golden handshake totalling millions of dollars, and still believes he did nothing wrong.
Lets also consider the players who have been charged, they are now and will always be known as drug cheats, any future careers or business ventures that they could have used their football careers to enhance or trade off is gone. They still have no idea of what cocktail of drugs they were given other than what was listed by WADA. One of those drugs was designed for use on horses and not fit for human consumption. If a medical centre were to conduct similar "experiments" on their patients and be found guilty, they would be shut down and sent broke from malpractice law suits.
I agree Essendon got belted hard for bringing the game into disrepute, but that is exactly as it should have been. They have now been found to have run a clandestine illegal doping program, even their own internal report was damning in the way the club conducted itself.. The AFL need to consider what to do about Essendon as a club that has been found guilty of transgressing an international code regarding the use of illegal performance enhancing drugs.

I get the feeling some won't be happy until Essendon FC is obliterated and gone forever. That serves no purpose folks.

Bpurple, I'm not sure Essendon should be punished according to the view we have of ourselves. Australians are, like everyone else, enormous hypocrites. We're the country that actually believed Warney when he said he took a diuretic because his Mum told him it would help him lose weight.

Essendon, Hird, Dank etc all thought they were being clever. Up-to-but-not-over the line they thought. The problem was, they weren't nearly as clever as they thought. Does anyone actually think they were trying to cheat?

But at the end of the day, they did. The players have copped a whack, because under the rules it's up to them to know what is being put into their body. The club has copped a bunch of whacks - missed finals, fined, stripped of draft picks - basically everything short of being banned as a club. The real damage is ancillary: they will be out millions, their team will suck for years, and they are still in the gun for civil claims. I'm not sure what good banning them does.

I think the real problem that opposition fans have is Essendon's lack of acknowledgement that they did anything wrong. As long as they keep claiming they were either wronged or harshly done by, this subject will die a long protracted death.

If someone at Essendon HQ had the balls to front up and admit they were wrong and cop the punishment without squealing, this would never have become the pitiful saga it has.

Most people don't want Essendon obliterated but they do want them to own their actions and that's the club, the coach and the players.

If Hird can take full responsibility for doing absolutely nothing wrong the club should be able to as well.

Hey Raglan Matt,

I thought Essendon were properly punished by being given John Worsfold as a head coach? What did I miss??
