If Essendon didn't get top up players then they wouldn't be able to field a team, which would mean refunds for tickets and a 10% loss in ticket sales for Fremantle.

Nothing to do with supporters or ticket sales, all about tv rights and the bookies being kept happy, this top up team may actually win a game this year.

Yeah, the AwFL show every week how much they care about any loss in revenue for Freo, unless of course it affects Freo's ability to pay the bull$h!t fines the tribunal hands out on a regular basis.

Essendon should be made to upgrade all their players on their current rookie list to play on their main list first who must play unless injured. Those players brought in as top up players should have a majority age cap of 20 years old with only two of their top up players allowed to be ex-AFL players older than 20. These should all be rookie listed after the playing roster is full. They are supposed to be getting punished for drug cheating, allowing them access to players who are seasoned veterans and in some cases better than those players being suspended is an insult to the game.

The players have to have been on an AFL list in the past 2 seasons, so they are all going to be rejects that no one wanted.

Jamar, Crowley, Stokes, Kelly and Polkinghorne are all pretty handy rejects, and the 2 years on an AFL list is an AFL requirement which doesn't necessarily make it right. It just sucks they get found guilty of systemic drug cheating and then get the red carpet treatment to top up their list. I think they should have to travel by bus to all their interstate games, have the hot water facilities withdrawn for showers, wear fluoro yellow shirts stating they are drug cheats from Essendon FC and knock on the doors of every house in Melbourne explaining and apologising for what they did. Then we would have laid the foundations where we could start with the punishment.
On another tack, have the AFL now set a precedent for clubs whose players are found guilty of drug cheating by allowing these top ups?
Lets also consider, Essendon have (had) 42 players on their club list, 12 have been suspended leaving 30 on the list. I think maybe giving them 5 or 6 top up players may have been fair whilst delivering more of a punishment. Remember the year Harvey got his marching orders from Freo? For half that season Freo had about 30 players available for selection and the AFL gave us jack in the way of top ups. Essendon cheated and all the concern from AFL TV cash central is over how they will recover, who gives a rat's.

You're not being practical about it. Essendon have to be able to field a team, the league, the other teams and the members of the other clubs would be punished if the couldn't; and whatever your opinion, the Essendon players were found guilty and punished by WADA, not the club. They have to have a full squad to choose from because they are bound to get injuries. If they take recently delisted players that weren't good enough to be on an AFL list in 2016 then they're not stealing anything from the system.

As far as Red Carpets go, getting a bunch of clapped out has-beens and never-weres is probably the equivalent of the Logies.

It will be interesting to see what people think if this bunch of clapped out has been's beat us this year or go a lot better than most people think. Did anyone here seriously think the WCE would make it to last years GF? Just sayin strange shite happens on the footy field. And as for the Essendon football club being punished as opposed to the players, the club probably have more to answer for, as they instigated the program and then hid it. Systemic cheating means everyone is complicit.
If we are were worried about ticket sales, let them have all the top up players they want, just take their points of them for the 2016 season like the Melbourne storm got punished when the breached the salary cap. That way anyone who wants to see them play gets to see them play, no fixtures need adjusting, no reprogramming for TV, they just win the wooden spoon.

They did that in 2013.

Yyyyeah but nah, in 2013 they dropped from 7 to 9 on the ladder, not stripped of points just a couple of draft picks and were banned from playing finals because of bringing the game into disrepute and what not, so different penalty for a different set of circumstances. Now they have been charged with drug cheating (new set of circumstances) so surely this requires a new set of punishments.
WADA as I understand it are still not finished with the Essendon FC, because they are waiting for Dank to get all of his BS out of the way. So the club (not the playing group) may find itself facing more penalties. Then there are the players planning appeals........ you know what they really don't need any outside intervention for punishment, they are doing a great job of tearing their club to pieces from within, good luck to them.

They were charged with bringing the game into disrepute because it was the only thing that was the easiest way to penalise them. It had the effect of kicking them out of the finals without altering the ladder too much, which the AFL use in their fixture calculations and decisions to award priority picks. They were also banned from the draft and fined $2 million dollars.
