These clubs knew when they recruited the Essendon players, that they could be banned or suspended. They still chose to recruit them, so must live with their decisions. Do Freo get a top up player because Gumbleton was injury-prone (something Freo knew and took a gamble on) ? NO. The rorts that go on to help out the "struggling clubs" are not in the best interests of the game, and it is about time the media took the long term view not the populists and AFL self interests view.

Whether they knew is kinda irrelevant. Freo never knew Pitt had a future career ending heart complaint when they selected him now did they, or that our first pick in 2009 would have 3 recos. No special dispensation for those extraordinary circumstances was there.

I suppose if they allow Port, Western and Melbourne to add players, then they probably should have had some kind of Top Up Draft as Essendon are getting the first picks.

The only extraordinary circumstance I can think of was back in 2004/5 off-season when Melbourne were allowed to add a player (Shannon Motlop) to their list after Troy Broadbridge lost his life in the Boxing Day Indian Ocean tsunami.
