Hawthorn have a very similar tractor with Japanese GPS. It also has new invisibility technology and comes out only at the breaks on game day to adjust oval widths and length, depending on which way Hawthorn are kicking.
They bought it across with them to last year's final at Subi.
I'm sure that's why some many of our kicks went astray and why we looked tired with the wind....

I'll take a stab at McCarthy's situation (disclaimer, my opinion only without any inside knowledge of what has actually transpired);

In 2013, McCarthy is drafted by GWS at pick 14. Freo and McCarthy may have been hopeful he was to get picked up at pick 17. Freo therefore pick Apeness. In early 2014, prior to having played an AFL game, McCarthy signs a contract extension with GWS through to the end of 2017. He is now being criticised by many for doing this. But if I try to imagine I'm in his shoes, I can see a situation where he is in a new environment at Sydney, there appears to be no future for him at West Coast (with a current strong list of forwards) and Fremantle now have Taberner and Apeness as possible future forwards. By signing a contract, which I would imagine both his manager (Young) and GWS would be pushing him to do, he would be giving himself some financial security and his current best opportunity for a career in the AFL.

Fast forward to 2015 and he is aware that Freo would like him back in WA. He now has a far better option than being in Sydney. He and his manager do everything they can to convince GWS that he wants to return to WA and if an opportunity exists in WA, he will not stay at GWS at the end of his contract (or prior). GWS put their head in the sand and take a stand against letting contracted players go. Publicly McCarthy is then demonised as only wanting to leave because of a lucrative offer from Freo. Exagerated offers are circulated in the media and are still being quoted today by online commenters. The GWS coach is now publicly stating that AFL is hard and McCarthy basically needs to toughen up if he wants to play AFL.

Why is it so hard for people to have some compassion for McCarthy's position when he and his manager appear to have informed the club that they have no intention of a long term relationship with GWS and they have received nothing back apart from bad publicity and a stance of GWS ignorance and public display of you are contracted and just need to toughen up if you want to play AFL. I'm not sure there would be many players who would be tough enough to just suck it up and knuckle down (for 2 more years) and do what's best for a club that has completely ignored your requests.

I can accept GWS taking a position of he is a contracted and a required player, but for them to just pretend that they can make him happily stay at the club and offer the club something positive, leaves me questioning their motives. I think this is a case where the principle of "the good of the team is greater than the good of the individual player" may have gone too far.

Agreed DK. Signing the extension was unhelpful for him, and he might have been given some bad advice. Still, he was an 18 year old who had never played a senior game who had years of (some degree of) certainty put in front of him. I'm not sure too many young kids chasing their dream to play AFL turn that down. It was a shrewd move by GWS, and very hard-headed to make him honour his contract. In fact, when you're dealing with young kids far from home, it borders on sharp practise. As we saw with Essendon and also Harley Bennell, I think clubs owe teenage boys a duty of care. I think GWS has shown it will only do that when it suits them. I imagine as an agent, that would be In the back of my mind from here on in. Maybe that's what they want, but both GWS and CM have come out of this poorly in the short term.

On reflection, I think signing the extension is a little over-blown in terms of importance. Had he not extended, there is no guarantee he could have come back to Freo. GWS would still have to have traded him, and based on their behaviour to date, there's no reason to think they would have been reasonable. My (limited) understanding suggests that would have meant going into the pre-season draft at the end of his contract, and hoping that 14 other clubs let him slide by.

If you identify genuine talent on your list it makes sense to sign them whether they are staying or not. GWS: Pass.

Then you try to make them want to stay. GWS: Fail.

It also makes sense to identify anyone who is not going to stick around and trade them at top dollar before something goes wrong. GWS: Fail

My understanding his situation was; sign the contract extension or you will not play a game. Freo needed to see him play.

I do wonder what the football media spin on this would be if McCarthy's home happened to be in Melbourne ...

This is just an example of a recruiting system failing to keep up with the evolution of the game. First zone based recruitment failed, and then as the game became more national the draft system has started showing cracks too. If the AFL was still a predominantly state based game it wouldn't be as much of an issue. When a kid lives in Carlton but is drafted to North Melbourne he's still close to family and friends and the support networks that can exist there.

I think a zone-draft hybrid system might be the way to go. Give non-Victorian clubs priority over young players within their catchment area. At least for the first two picks. Or as an alternative, have each AFL club nominate via blind ballot prior to the draft their top forty choices and have these players "quarantined" and free for any club to choose. Then the rest can be pre selected by state clubs in their locality. If there is more than one local club interested then there can be a minor draft for that player, or some other tie-breaking mechanism implemented to make sure it's fair.

The problem is that our guys couldn't sit in a room with their guys and organise a deal. Too many people worrying about their own ego and not about getting the best outcome.

My work renewing our corporate sponsorship last month. Guy said GWS wouldn't even return their calls. Hard to do a deal when there's no one to do it with.
