So I dropped in on training yesterday morning, and some of the guys were practising set shots on goal. They had nice cardboard cutouts for the man on the mark, and were kicking goals from various spots. Or should I say, missing goals - from 25 m out, at a 50 degree angle. Mzungu kicked goals, but Clancee, Barlow, Griffin, De Boer, and some young guys who I don't know yet, they all missed shots.
With footy now being a possession game, missing a shot on goal is only slightly better than giving away a free kick. One point better, to be precise. You just can't afford to miss.
Anyhow, Ross, here is what you do.
Firstly, put a pair of goalposts 2 m apart in the centre of the goals. In training, that is what the players aim for. If they can't hit the target, they should feel bad.
Secondly, have flashing lights and canned applause for when the ball goes through. Bronx cheers for when it misses. Its a big deal in game, so make it a big deal in training.
