What does the captain do nowadays anywsy. They don't even get to toss the coin anymore. They call out heads, rattle off the coach's saying of the week before the game and do a midwerk ad for the club merchandise disguised as a tv interview.

You could give the job to a tape recorder in a polo shirt.

I think you're confusing captain with commentator.

A captain has to lead the guys on the field and keep them organised when the game starts to go pear shaped.

Now a commentator is one of those things that makes noise in a shirt. Mind you, a tape recorder in a polo shirt would still have a higher IQ than Basil.

PS: This is 2015. Who uses tape recorders these days? Thats so 1990

Back to everyone's favourite sheep-hucker: by memory, Pav stepped forward in the same way that Fyfe has put his hand up (and Belly got snotted). But my reservation is that Nat has never put in a full season - he surges, then copes with the injuries for a bit (or gets suspended) before sitting in the stands. He came close in 2013, but he's not a full-season footy player - he's a surger.

A captain should be a game in/game out player - like Michael Johnno, like Mundy, like Pav. But if the idea is to get someone that everyone is going to love (especially the media), you can't beat Fyfe (or Hill for that matter). If you want a captain that everyone will look up to, you got the greatest standing at a magnificent 211cms available.

Theres only one way Pav wont be elected in by the players again. And that's if he pulls out of the race, citing he wants to give a handover year and mentor in a young captain. If he throws his hat in the ring, he will win it in a landslide. Pav will never not be captain whilst he still wants the job.

Why complicate an issue that doesn't need complicating. Let Pav be captain and let the cobblers do the cobblering.
