TOPIC: Possible Dockers Jumper Numbers

The Eagles announced their jumper numbers yesterday, so looking forward to seeing who the new Dockers numbers go to considering we had a few Dockers legends retire.

#4 - I think Harley Bennell will wear number 4, although would much rather see Sheridan in number 4 and Bennell taking 11 so he can continue the tradition of great indigenous players to have worn it. Also wouldn't mind seeing Balic wear number 4, someone posted a video that suggested Balic played a lot like Gavin Wanganeen (fingers crossed)

#15 - Harley Balic. Think he will wear Crowleys number 15 which I think is a good fit, not the quickest player, but handy in congestion.

#18 Darcy Tucker - level headed very composed defender, perfect fit to take McPharlins number. (Or the Dockers might keep it on ice for Cam McCarthy)

#24 Shane Yarran - No particular reason

#41 Sam Collins - big solid ready made defender, great fit for Paul Duffields 41

#40 Matt Uebergang - Hopefully he shows a bit to warrant taking Pavlichs number 29 in a few years, but in the mean time he can take locker 40. (Or he stays 40 and we give #29 to Jesse Hogan)

#43 Ryan Nyhuis -composed and a smooth mover like Roger Hayden back in the day, good fit for Nyhuis and hopefully he can be just as successful as Roger

I agree #29 should be retired when Pavlich is done. But if someone has to wear it, I'd be happy to see Jesse hogan wear it

Haha no, but if he is given #40, red red wine is something we should chant after a goal

I'd like to see my ongoing personal campaign for roman numerals on Freo jumpers get a little more traction. Pavlich XXIX. You know you want it Dockerlanders.

No jumper number - not even Pav's - should be retired. It's a well meaning tradition but once you start you can't really stop. Every time a half decent player retires there's an obligation to retire the number, before you know it blokes will be wearing nos. 77, 93 etc

The jumper gets retired for a year or two as a mark of respect until a worthy successor is found. Hogan would look good in the 29.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

There's a funny kind of paradox happening down at Parry Street. On the one hand, the legacy of jumper numbers doesn't appear to mean anything - the numbers of some of the supporter's favourites (such as Jeff) were just assigned to anyone; Mike wanted Des' old one, but it went to Sheridan. On the other hand, you've got Hase and Belly 'handing on' their numbers to new players (boy, was Sylvia the wrong choice).

It seems to me that almost all the other clubs make a big deal about which player should get what number - the media as well. As a consequence, most footy supporters do too. I'm no different, there's something in a number legacy - that's why I get perplexed by the two-faced approach at my own club.

Does it matter, or doesn't it matter? Make a stand and stick with it - if it doesn't mean anything, then just let it go. At the appropriate time, let's see Steve give Pav's number to some skinny wiener from Victoria (who just wants to go back home). Yeah, try that one on Steve.

A few months back I heard Paul Hasleby on radio make the suggestion to Lachie Neale that he might think about changing his jumper number and move to the vacant Number 4 jumper.

This was just a few minutes after he tried to contextualise that it wasn't anything personal when he said publicly that Fremantle should offer up Lachie Neale as a trade to GWS.

It met with a very smooth "No, I'm pretty happy with the number i've got, thanks Paul" kind of response.

Pollyanna - i don't think it matters, just adds a bit of romance to the game and the club.
I think they should try and work out a way to celebrate the changing of the guard. We can celebrate ours past Heros and build excitement for our new ones. Like today the Tigers announced that Daniel Rioli will be wearing number 17 like his famous uncle Maurice.
