TOPIC: Team for Round One/Grand Final 2016

Nelson Team for Round One/Grand Final 2016 8 years 5 months ago #1

Nelson
Ok, there's been some additions and losses over the past month or so, which has created plenty of discussion/debate about team structure etc.

So, this is my preferred line up for next year, with the current list:

Back: Ibbo, Dawson, A Pearce
HB: Sutcliffe, Johnson, Tucker
C: Hill, Neale, Suban
HF: Bennell, Pav, Walters
F: Yarran, Apeness, Ballas
Foll: Sandi, Fyfe, Mundy

I/C: Griffin, Tabs, DeBoer, Barlow

Thoughts? loads of unlucky players there. I am sure I have forgotten someone and probably got a few positions wrong as well.

Yea, struggled with that one, Probably should be spur instead of tucker at the moment.

You're putting a lot of faith in Apeness there (who I do rate) but I don't think he'll be up to speed by round one with his knee injury. He will need another pre-season to get his running up to scratch to run out RL's flooding tactics and even then will probably need someone like Mayne instead of Yarran helping him out.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Ironically, I think it's too tall... I don't think Apeness and Tabs would both make the team.. especially with Grif and Sandi. I would think it's one or the other? Maybe Mayne instead of one of them?

Yes I agree that they wont play Pav, Tabs and Apeness you wouldn't think.
Also I think Collins plays before Tucker. He is a ready made, mature age tall backman, I think he won the fairest and best for Box Hill. He would probably play before Tucker. Hopefully instead of Dawson. Dawson and A Pearce should fight it out for the third tall spot in the back line.
Spurr plays.
see you've also dropped D Pearce and Mayney.
Going to be some impressive efforts at training over the preseason.

I wouldn't mind seeing in 2016

FB - Spurr - Dawson - Ibbotson
HB - Sutcliffe - Mundy - Johnson
C - D.Pearce - Bennell - Hill
HF -Mayne - Fyfe - Walters
FF - Ballantyne - Pavlich - Clarke
FOLL - Sandilands - Barlow - Neale
INT - DeBoer Suban Sheridan A.Pearce

EMG- Crozier C.Pearce Silvagni Griffin Yarran

I think with Bennell joining the list and the amount of midfielders coming through our system. I think Mundy could move toHalf Back to replace McPharin's class.
I don't think Yarran will start the season, but hope he does, would like to see him cause headaches for opposition coaches

Thought Spurr might have got a game.
Also I reckon Weller and Blakely are more likely to get a game than Tucker.
Would love to see Yarran playing:
My team:
FB: Spurr, Dawson, A Pearce
HB: Ibbo, Johnson, Mzungu
C: Hill, Neale, Bennell
HF: Barlow, Tabs, Walters
FF: Yarran, Pav, Ballaz
FOLL: Sandi, Fyfe, Mundy
INT: Griffin, Weller, D Pearce, Sheridan/Blakely/Tucker

I like your team D4B, however I would have Suban and Sutcliffe instead of Gu and D Pearce.

I see that Mayne is consistently missing out and D Pearce also - clearly these are the two under the most pressure in competing for spots since the recruitment Bennell and Yarran. It really is fantastic to have a team so good, that these two are now on the fringes.

IMHO with the reduced rotations next year we'll see our rucks spend 100% game time on the field which will see sandi spending extended time up forward "resting" and our forward/ruck more time on the ball which tends to favour Griff over Clark, given we have just recruited two tall defenders who have both spent time up forward I think Tabs should be very worried. The bench will be loaded with runners as short breaks won't be an option so our third tall forward will have to be able to swing back if any of our tall defenders are injured.

Gu, C Pearce and DB will struggle for a regular game especially if they finally decide to throw a few more games at some of the younger guys. Suban might be on the fringe as well

Clarke signed a 1 year extension. 1 big year to prove himself.

D Pearce has missed 1 match since arriving at Freo. He will probably still have a regular spot but for outside speed weller would be the one here.

Sheriden is RoLys love child, he will continue to get a game and as a first round pick he needs to produce more.

I see tucker competing with sutcliffe for a spot

I see gray trying to compete with spurr, but stats for our win/loss suggest spurr should be a regular player.

Yarran will compete with mayne for a spot.

Apeness you would think can pinch hit in the ruck, so if fit would probably get the nod over tabs.

Pavlich wont play every match, so apeness and pavlich will likely play together on a number of occaisions.

MJ will likely get managed as well so we should see Collins get a couple of starts.

Reduced rotations will be interesting.

I wouldn't be surprised if clubs go with one or 2 less talls and bring in a couple of 'tall mids' or med fwds/backs. More run, less lumber, more versatile. Guns mids resting forwards/back, and the mid sized fwds/backs getting a swing through the middle. Maybe 1 genuine ruckman and a tall defender that can do 10-20% game time ruck.

I'm wondering if Sutcliffe is safe. I like him, but he has a surprising lack of strength for a defender, and that has hurt us in the past. Are any of the up and comers possible replacements for his role?

A few years ago, I really struggled with D Pearce (due to his costly turnovers) now I see him as an extremely important player for Freo. Why? Because Freo is desperate for more inside 50s and D Pearce is one of the best in the comp at this.
If Freo want to kick more goals to match the likes of Hawthorn, then the startling statistic they need to improve on is the inside 50s. This is why I am so excited by Bennell's addition to the team. I expect combined about 300 i50s between Bennell, D Pearce and Hill in 2016. That's going to be very hard for opposition teams to negate/check/tag through the midfield.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.
