TOPIC: Good start to the draft

Right on Drubbing. We couldn't manage to play anyone from the last two drafts in the finals, already have an overabundance of midfielders, delist a midfielder who won the Peel F&B and then use our first two picks to choose two more midielders.

Collins could easily get a gig, he played in the VFL all of last year.

We will have a few midfielders retiring or being pushed over the next 2 or 3 years, the education our next generation are getting at Peel and the occasional taste at Freo means the transition will be seamless. Yarran in the forward line will mean that opposition teams have less options for zoning off on Pav and Tabs, and I would hope for big years from both. Tabs is more likely to get a bigger slower opponent with the type of player who marked him last year now required for Yarran.
And the other bright spot, we are going for the Harleys not those tinny sounding Hondas and Yamahas.

Exactamundo. The draft is a chocolate wheel of apprentices. Some never finish the apprenticeship. Having a couple of blokes who are older and can play the local comp doesn't mean they can play in the AFL.

While Freo does need to plan for mids retirements, mids will always be around. What they've failed to do for years is plan for forwards. Something they could have gone hard at this year. There were other fish besides McCarthy. They could have given up early picks, still had one left for Tucker, who might be ready made, and used the early picks and some players still with potential, to snare a decent forward.

They might not have got one, but christ you'd like to see them actually try.

Just watching the highlights clips of our new draftees, Darcy Tucker is composed well balanced and his kicking to targets was spot on, I don't think he missed a target = great first choice.

Harley Balic looks agile ,composed and likes to give and go again, reminds me of a young Simon Black = another great choice.

Sam Collins has no video but I'm assuming Hale has talked him up as a good solid defender we will need = I hope he's a good replacement for McPharlin.

Shane Yarran is probably the the best last pick we've ever taken, unstoppable in the WAFL , fast on a lead, agile , great mark and uncanny goal sense = can't wait to see a forward line that has Ballantyne, Walters, Bennell, Mayne, Pavlich and Yarran in it .

Great draft for Freo

While having a good playing pedigree in the VFL or WAFL is no guarantee they can make it in the AFL, it's a better sign than the reverse. They've not done too badly with their selections last night. Sure they didn't snare any high KPP's, which is annoying, but in reality securing those through the draft for the now was probably best placed in the (wasted) 2010/2011 drafts. What they did get this year by all accounts is a few potential bargains, a possible-ready-made tallish defender and a possible-ready-made forward who promises to be one of the most immediately intriguing draftees in terms of their capacity to impact in 2016.

Agreed I am happy with the draft. I think the development of the young tall's already on our list will surprise a few people next season. I really like the look of Balic and I think he was too good to pass up at 38. Collins is clearly a tactical pick up for the ability to impact next year. He will provide depth at full back but I don't expect him to break into our fully fit best 22 although If he can kick then The Fist might be out of a job. I like Yarrans size, he is not like any other forward we have in that he seems to be a true tall-small hybrid. It will be very interesting what our forward setup looks like next year. We have an abundance of talented small medium forwards so maybe if Apeness can get fit and strong then he can be the Monster that the smalls can feed off. Anyway like I said I am happy with the draft but my Fremantle mug has always been half full, cant wait for 2016!!

Yarran can hopefully deliver what Mayne has promised for so long, but only really delivered for 2 seasons, and that is a fast accurate third tall option up front.

Agreed there Matt. I love Mayney but his kicking is woeful. If I took anything from our our finals loses in the last 3 years, it is that we need players who can convert inside 50s into goals. I don't have a specific agenda as to what size they are. All that matters is that they create and take their chances.

Mayne strength is his pressure but I am not sure that is enough anymore. Pains me to say that.

Zac Dawson must be in about his last year in the AFL, hence picking up the Box Hill chap who won the best and fairest in a team of blokes trying to break into the best team in the AFL. To do that he must have played all right because there are some pretty handy players in the Box Hill team, so being the best is again nothing to be sneeze at. I would suggest Hale had a lot to do with that decision (Ross - "Hales, as a defender, who would you pick out of the Box hill team? Hale - Sam Collins. Ross - Thanks done).
Shane Yarran - nothing to be said just turn him loose and it may be curtains for the Mayne man unless he can re-invent himself as a backman.
Tucker and Ballich are very good by foot and endurance athletes, who don't panic (we all remember Roger Haydens ability to bend time and he will coach these lads ) delivery into the forward line/out of the backline are I am sure factors that will stand these boys in good stead. How many times have we got the ball into space only to watch it go sailing over a forwards head or to his toes? That shite is as frustrating as not kicking goals. Given what was available we did OK. Their are still some tall folks around for Fridays drafting so maybe we will get one there.

So if Dawson is in his last year and we picked someone to replace him where does that leave Pav?
Not in his last year and no-one to replace him?

Zac Dawson has a contract running through to the end of 2017.

Fremantle’s general manager of player management Brad Lloyd said the club was rapt that Dawson had extended his contract.

“Zac’s hardly missed a game and he fills a key post, so he’s a really important player for us structurally,” he said.

Get used to him being around for a long while yet.

Bugger Dawson.

No Pav replacement means the great man will stick around for our second flag in 2017.
