TOPIC: Community Engagement

In a deal struck with Racing and Wagering WA, the WA National Football League Umpires Association will get $50,000 for observing activity around the stables of horses in the hours leading up to major races such as next Saturday’s Railway Stakes and Winterbottom Stakes.

RWWA racing integrity general manager Denis Borovica said stewards wanted to move away from traditional crowd controller security. He was optimistic it would be the start of a long-term association and believed the umpires were perfect for the job as virtual “stewards for a day”.

“We wanted to engage more with the community in this space and with people we thought were a bit more like ourselves - umpires,” Mr Borovica said.

I'd be keen to know the difference between community engagement and hiring out umpires for private security. Presumably in the second version you have to pay award rates.

Is Phil O'Reiily still the principal investigator for the RWWA stewards?

O'Reilly is gawnski.
The release should say something like this....

It was found that normal crowd control types are prone to falling asleep and accepting bribes to look the other way whilst the horse is being treated. The old "Whats that under the rock" usually works well.
I suppose when you pay peanuts you get monkeys..
On the other hand we know community umpires are boring friendless types and have nothing better to do on the weekend that hang around a fly infested smelly stable for 12-18 hours at a time.
They have impeccable standing in the community and we understand they even love to be the centre of attention so we expect many more reports than we ever received with those dodgy nighclub controllers.

So when they see some sort of infringement do they give the horse or the jockey 50 metres ?

Incompetence is probably cheaper than corruption with basically the same outcome.

I'm sure they'll really be able to blend in with the crowd and not be noticed in their lime green shirt, tight shorts and whistle.

Wait till they blow the whistle in the stable, that'll be a right giggle.

They'll be useless without someone coaching them through an ear piece "watch out for that Damian Oliver, don't let him get away with his usual stuff.... Well done, got him"

This is so pointless on so many levels, I can't help wondering who at racing and gaming has a mate at the umps association?

The point is to make fifty grand by renting the integrity of their people.

Do WAFL umps have any? Because the AFL is bereft...

I still don't see the point. Security is there to stop people doing stuff or chuck people out, not keep watch and report them if they think they're doing something dodgy.

The umpires are just trying to screw Ballas over in the off season too.

Yeah, but let's face it, the umpires do like a good nag.
