I am a little disappointed by the negativity shown by some about this signing given all the rumours going around during trade week and the very possible fact we could have lost Weller for next to nothing next year as an uncontracted player, coupled with the AFL website constantly showing posts of him on holiday with his brother. Given we just traded in Harley who would bump Weller further down the pecking order and the perceived lack of opportunity he has of locking down a starting position next year, I would have thought this was a big signing for the future of our club. Apparently the glass is half empty for a lot of dockerlanders out there.

When Freo picked Weller up as their first pick in the (No.13) 2014 draft, they knew what he could deliver. Josh Simpson was pick 14, and they also knew what they were getting. Alex Pearce is another but as a KPP, he was going to take a little more time. These signings are a huge coup like GWS signing Cam McCarthy until 2017.

Jezza - looking back at that 2012 draft. Simpson was taken at 17.
We thought we knew what we were getting - but not to be.
In hindsight - theres not too many players behind him that would still be on our list.
It seems a light draft

Timmy sumner looks like the best pick after Simpson , so I agree - worth the risk.
That being said it would be nice to see our recruiters identify the pick we need and its likely position , then trade up a couple spots to ensure it if required. I know it's not an exact science but we clearly wanted Mcarthy in his draft year and could have traded up a couple of picks to ensure it then with tradable players , instead of offering 2 first rounders 2 years later on.

Josh wasn't a risk - he was God's gift to football, an opportunity that was squandered away over stupid little things that shouldn't have mattered (but ended up busting the camel's back).

It is all too easy to identify the talent, the hard part is trading up a couple of spots to get the talent everyone else has also identified. They are not going to trade away their own chance of getting a Watts, OMeara, Boyd, Gibbs or the like.
