No Thursday night matches, yesssssssss!

And three home games in a row with the derby in the middle. That means Slime are not getting the same easy run home.

Wouldn't make any difference Shane.

Non-Victorian teams don't draw the crowds in Melbourne, regardless who they are or how attractive their football. They are therefore scheduled away from Melbourne at every opportunity.

In 2015, Hawthorn played 9 home and away games at the MCG, 8 were against Victorian teams. The lone exception was the GF replay v Sydney, a courtesy they also extended to us in 2014.

Collingwood played 14 games at the MCG, 13 were against Victorian teams.

Western Bulldogs were a team who played a fairly even split of games v Victorian and non-Victorian teams at Etihad Stadium.

Their 7 games v Victorian teams drew an average of 32389, with a lowest crowd of 26511 (v St Kilda).

Their 6 games v non-Victorian teams drew an average of 19894, with a highest crowd of 22366 (v Slime).

Our round 7 clash with the Bullies featured the 6-0 top of the table Freo (playing some of the prettiest football this side of the lingerie league) against the 4-2 Bullies. The crowd that day? 18970. Not even the prospect of a Fisher/Dalgleish/Stevic bloodbath could draw the punters (and they delivered too (25-11)).

That is some genuinely dodgy work. Using the Western Bulldogs as a measure for crowd drawing? Here's something no one has ever said "The Doggies are playing Fremantle on Sunday afternoon, do you think we'll be able to get a ticket?"

That Fremantle can't draw a crowd in Melbourne doesn't alter the fact that they need to draw a crowd if they want to play more big games in Melbourne. Hawthorn don't think they can make as much money playing us in Melbourne as they can Sydney and West Coast. So we go to Tasmania.

If you really want to make a difference to the competition, and avoid the $$$ loss at Etihad for Kangaroos, Bulldogs, Saints, all that needs to happen is arrange a rotation over consecutive years of the non-financial Victorian clubs to 'sell' home games in Perth against Freo or the Toast. Guaranteed minimum 35K crowds and home ground cut of the take.
No problems about 'overuse' of Subiaco (or Burswood in future) if we can run three games like we did on Prelim Final weekend + the WAFL GF.
If that selling strategy works for Darwin or Cairns, no reason why it won't work here.
And of course it would counteract the undue burden of travel by WA clubs. Wouldn't it be outrageous to think that we might play 13 games at Subiaco, or even 14 in a year? That number of games is not considered outrageous for Richmond, Collingwood for instance at the G.

Shane, I used Western Bulldogs in the example because they are one of the few Victorian clubs who played a similar number of games v Vic and non-Vic clubs alike.

The big Victorian clubs do not host non-Vic teams too often:

Hawthorn @ MCG: 8 games v Vic teams - 1 game v non-Vic teams.
Collingwood @ MCG: 13 games v Vic teams - 1 game v non-Vic teams.
Essendon @ MCG: 8 games v Vic teams - 0 games v non-Vic teams.
Richmond @ MCG: 10 games v Vic teams (ave 59959) - 4 games v non-Vic teams (ave 39858).
Carlton @ MCG: 7 games v Vic teams (ave 53992) - 2 games v non-Vic teams (ave 29864).

The smaller Victorian clubs do most of the heavy lifting when it comes to hosting non-Victorian teams:

North Melbourne @ Docklands: 7 games v Vic teams (ave 35336) - 4 games v non-Vic teams (ave 25211).
St Kilda @ Docklands: 8 games v Vic teams (ave 31761) - 4 games v non-Vic teams (ave 21664).
Melbourne @ MCG: 9 games v Vic teams (ave 39996) - 4 games v non-Vic teams (ave 25487).

Victorian football fans do not want to watch non-Victorian teams, never have, never will.

It's not about Fremantle competing with Collingwood to get a game against Hawthorn. It's about Fremantle being a bigger draw card than Sydney, Adelaide and West Coast.

Fremantle v West Coast is alwas the biggest local crowds but the crowds for Fremantle v Geelong games have been bigger than Fremantle v Carlton in recent years. Carlton have huge support in WA but the Fremantle v Geelong games have been gooduns. People will go for a good game of football.

Victorian football fans will go to their traditional 'blockbuster' games, regardless if it's likely to be a goodun ot not.

Richmond v Essendon, rd 9 - 83804.
Richmond v Carlton, rd 1 - 83493.
Richmond v West Coast, rd 12 - 45178.
Richmond v Freo, rd 17 - 39777.
Collingwood v Essendon, rd 4 - 88395.
Collingwood v Carlton, rd 5 - 71759.
Collingwood v Richmond, rd 21 - 63178.
Collingwood v Richmond, rd 7 - 59034.

Richmond v WC and Richmond v Freo looked like being gooduns on paper and were, the Victorian fans don't care.

Whether we outdraw the Slime or Sydney in Melbourne really doesn't matter to the AFL. Say we get 50000 to a Collingwood v Freo game at the MCG...big deal...Collingwood v Carlton would have drawn 70000+.

WA football fans will go to watch Derbies, regardless of the position of the teams. SA football fans will go to watch Showdowns, regardless of the position of the teams. Crowd figures, where the supporters of the two teams live locally, are incomparable.

West Coast drew 7,000 more people than Fremantle to their game against Richmond at the MCG. That's a significant amount of money for an AFL club. That's where the competition lies for Fremantle. Not with Carlton or Essendon.

It's a wonder that the Deedums got more than a single game telecast over the past three seasons - they get most of their viewers off of Monday night's Footy Classified broadcast. They did pretty well with their fixtures in 2016.

Shane, the difference in crowds was actually 5401.

The Slime game was in the stand alone Friday night 'blockbuster' time slot. It was the second lowest attended MCG Friday night game all season.

The Freo game was in the bizarre 4.35pm Saturday twilight time slot, with an Essendon game scheduled at Etihad at 7.20pm the same night.

I wouldn't read too much into the relative difference in attendances.

Chuffed with this result, nothing much to complain about apart from the obvious Tasmanian trip and 1 game at the G.

The fact that we avoid Hawks, Sydney, Geelong, Port, Tigers and Kangaroos twice is big bonus, and get both GWS and Gold Coast twice, how good is that. Then finish the year with home derby, multiple home games and final round bye imo could not have asked for any more.

Find it amusing that we have forced the hand of the AFL with our B team selections for round 23, adds weight to peoples argument about sending B team to Tas. Maybe if we can make some noise about free kick discrepancy, may be able to have better result there as well.

Personally would prefer the soft draw than the extra game at the G. I don't really care if Victorians don't want to watch our style of footy and am enjoying supporting a genuine contender, although I don't really think they would watch us anyway.

If the AFL wanted to, they could pump Freo up, and improve our Melbourne crowds. You know, show a few highlights of Fyfe and Walters, get the Vic AFL followers a bit interested in us. Crowds would improve. Of course, it won't happen, because the AFL is mostly trying to save the crap Victorian sides from bankruptcy - so you get much discussion of the merits of Melbourne and Carlton, and they get to play at the G while we are in Tassie.

I know you are just stirring Shane, but the AFL know they can take us and the toast for granted, and they do.
