I'm not denouncing the achievements of Maurice and Sebastian but distinguishing the fact of your definition of indigenous club greats as they are more linked to the Richmond footy club, Stickers. Here's the problem which the AFL is grappling with when naming this round. They've grabbed Doug Nicholls as their rallying point of the, in their eyes, earliest significant involvement of indigenous Australians in football and chosen his name to represent Indigenous Round. Now I've known of Nicholls' many achievements for quite some time now and I don't have any problem with his choice as a figurehead, but parochial followers of all clubs will never be satisfied whether the name be Polly Farmer, Syd Jackson, Barry Cable, Irwin Lewis, Stephen Michael, Basil Campbell or Krakouer brothers. They've chosen Nicholls to be inclusive of all indigenous contribution not withstanding those of indigenous players who have represented all other AFL clubs. Also on the issue of pre and post 1995 representation, the Fremantle football club as it now exists as an AFL club must embrace all current members and players irrespective of their origins in order to to remain strong which means we have the best Captain and greatest ever player from South Australia and the best current player from Claremont.
