The only problem I'm seeing with that Polly is difficulty in sourcing enough rope to deal with the white coast "well he's indigenous to somehwere" egirls.

Its gonna cost a packet to lynch every boo-er.....certainly worth the expense though

So, is it being suggested that the Len Hall Tribute game be renamed every Anzac Day? if not, whats the difference ?

I'm not that big a fan of that either but...

It's not Len Hall Round. It's Fremantle's effort to localise the game.

You can argue about where Doug Nicholls football record places him in the scheme of great football players (yeah, he was probably no Barry Cable) but none of us ever saw him play. Still, to play for your state after only 50 odd games and finish 3rd in a Brownlow does attest to some kind of ability, and while he's not the only indigenous player to have played in state competitions in the first half of the previous century, he'd be amongst the few pioneers.

Outside of football, you could also argue (perhaps there's a better word than argue) about how significant a figure he is in Australian history. Or to take up Nelson's ANZAC analogy you might want to compare the importance of ANZAC day in Australian history with say, the importance of the '67 Referendum, and the decades of campaigning leading up to it which Doug Nicholls played a significant role. That '67 referendum which recognized aboriginal people as citizens of Australia, rather than some curious entry in the flora and fauna classifications - as Grant Hansen eloquently explained on "The Marngrook Footy Show" in the discussions following the 1st of the two Adam Goodes booing embarrassments at Subiaco.

Does an opposition team playing Fremantle "like" that the ANZAC Day game is renamed, with the AFL's permission - the Len Hall Tribute Game, when they could honor one of their own veterans (someone from the eastern states - if I'm following the argument being put forward in this thread so far...or maybe even some obscure ANZAC from New Zealand. Why be so parochial about it?) Hell, why not even name the game after some concientious objector. Crikey, there must have been a one or two of those somewhere along the line who could kick the pigskin too.

This is a pretty good read on Doug Nicholls (over 3 pages)

www.theage.com.au/news/national/a-lastin...7/1140151816836.html Has page links 2 & 3.

Or just read this quote:

“I want to suggest three things why you should bother about the Aborigines. Firstly, we belong to great family of God and he had made out of one blood all nations of men. Secondly, why you should bother about the Aborigines, we’re a part of the great British Commonwealth of nations. And thirdly, we want to walk with you, we don’t wish to walk alone.”

- Pastor Doug Nicholls from a sermon at Grove St Church Northcote (circa 1957?)

I'm not questioning his character, or his credentials as a footballer. I just don't think picking one individual to name the round after is a positive step, even if they'd called it the Jeff Farmer Appreciation Day.

In the case of Len Hall, I assume they were trying to put a real face in front of people to humanise an historical war.

The AFL indigenous round should go in the other direction and show the many faces of Aboriginal people. The different cultures, the different types of footballers and the different struggles of different generations. You can't celebrate Aboriginal Australia with one face.

Quite right. It is demeaning to say one symbol represents Aboriginal people. Far morte complex than that but I guess you have to start somewhere.
Even channel egurl has two faces of football - denden and bwucy. Actually having said that I'm not sure it's a good argument. Back to the toast.

Would be good if the Freo hierarchy took the opportunity to acknowledge an indigenous club great / family each year

2016 - Stephen Michael / Clem Michael
2017 - Maurice Rioli / Sebastian Rioli
2018 - Kevin Taylor
2019 - Garry Dhurkhay
2020 - Jeff Farmer
2021 - Antoni Grover

You'd have enough great players to keep this going year on year

Great idea Shane! The "Jeffrey Farmer Appreciation Day". Might need some work to get a catchy acronym, but I'll run it past the AFL head honchos and see what they reckon...

Just roll your crazed and disbelieving eyes over this list of surnames of the currently AFL-listed players of Noongar origin.

Hill
Bennell
Garlett
Jetta
Franklin
Yarran
Griffin
Ryder

You could have a solely Noongar side that would be more than competitive.

Doug Nicholls was a top bloke and is really quite important in the context of Victorian football but when it comes to Indigenous representation in the AFL, take a squizzy at this map

www.aflplayers.com.au/indigenous-map/

and try and steer clear of the notion we should be celebrating particular language or regional groups and we should be kicking off with the mighty Noongar warriors.

I can see Shanes point about celebrating diversity and the many faces, but I won't share the same pessimism that honoring (Sir) Doug Nicholls is going to detract from that.

Doug Nicholls work as a field officer for the Aboriginal Advancement League, travelling and liasing with various aboriginal tribes across the nation and bringing their stories to wider attention in opposition to what was being written in the popular news press (little seems to have changed there) by distributing leaflets and pamphlets, showing film footage from his travels at church halls, editing the publication Black Shadows, writing countless letters to editors etc which left a legacy of understanding that we don't have to look at a homogonized version of aboriginal culture.

I'm mindful that my knowledge on Doug Nicholls has magnified only the last 24 hours, having previously only seen him as a significant figure in a few TV documentaries on Australian history, but I thought his was an excellent read too:

Looking at the indigenous player map website - www.aflplayers.com.au/indigenous-map - I didn't know that both Alex Pearce and Brady Grey are Palawa people from Tasmania. Crikey - how many indigenous players does that make on the Freo list? This builds on the legacy of the original Freo team which had a plethora of indigenous champions from day one.

I'm not sure but I think Plethora was either Greek or Croation. Definitely not indigenous.
