TOPIC: So....who do we draft?

So we've concluded the trading period bringing in Harley Bennell for pick 16 & 35 and receiving pick 22 in return for GC. Then right at the last minute, we swapped picks 56 & our 2016 round-two pick with GC for 35 and 61. If only Cammac played for GC we might have had a chance to get him!

As it stands, we have picks 22, 35, 61, 74, 92, 110 & 128.

I wonder if the club has up its sleeve, now that we missed out on Cammac (this year), a plan to pick up delisted free agent Mason Shaw (197cm, 92kg)? He was spoken highly of on this forum a few years back just before Port picked him up. He has apparently but on 20kg since being recruited, but with the trading in of Ryder last year and now Dixon - plus the re-signing of Shultz - he was squeezed out.

As we may be able pick him up with one of the junk late picks, I'd be happier with this scenario than if we had of traded out early draft picks and/or players to get one of Black or Casboult.

Looking at the phantom form guide on the AFL website here, there doesn't seem to be any talls after pick 20. Anyone got any smokies from other comps (e.g. WAFL, SANFL, VFL, etc.) that could be worth a look??

Darcy Cameron 20 yo from Claremont, 204 cm, 104 kg, essentially a ruckman who does play forward @ times kicked 11 goals from 11 games in WAFL seniors 2015. Has been talked up as a highend draft pick in last 2 drafts but overlooked on the actual day. Developing well @ Claremont. Not the worst. Also Mason Shaw delisted from Port.

Hasn't Shaw struggled with the OP and that has kept him off the paddock?

As you say Gumnut, Darcy Cameron is essentially a ruckman who plays a bit forward. We've got that covered. We need a forward who can step up straight away.

Yes, BR, that does seem to be the case.

I remember another bloke we picked up in 2001 from Hawthorn who had struggled early in his career due to OP - AA Luke.

We'd be due a bit of luck on the drafting-injury-plagued-players front - so maybe he could be it!

Just going from the write up, I'd be quite happy if the real draft followed the phantom and we picked up Riley Bonner (85kg / 191cm):

Bonner's most damaging trait is his left-foot kicking: he can pinpoint short passes, set up the play from half-back with long bombs and is trusty when he's got the ball in his hands. His rebounding work out of defence for South Australia at the under-18 carnival saw him named an All Australian, and given his height he is able to play on smaller and taller forwards when required.

Sorry, I forgot: lack of forwards is our only problem.

Scratch that: I'd go for GWS Academy player Harrison Himmelberg.

I'm not above acting out of spite.

It will be telling what sort of strategy they take. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't go for some of the more mature recruits with a few selections this year. Mitch Brown from Sandringham if available is an obvious one, but there might be a few others they have their eyes on.

The problem is that with our list as it is, to push for Premiers this season we need mature age talls, as drafted 18 year olds will be no good for at least 1-2 years and that's too long for Pav to hang around, hence we have to look at rejects and players such as Cameron and others who may have slipped through the net.

Hard pressed to get a quality tall at pick 22. Will Callum Chee be around, if so take him.

Too small, Hypen. I don't doubt the kid's ability but realistically the only players he'competes for a spot with are Ballantyne, Walters and Bennell. He's a midget. How about Waylen Manson if he's still kept in shape. The amount of baggage Harley brings is surely greater than Waylen's issues which if I remember were mainly connected to homesickness.

I'd be redrafting Menegola and Ballard with the later picks if they are still available. Maybe if we are lucky we can get Shane Yarran.
I think it's already clear that Ross wants to play Fyfe up forward more often. Pav goes another year. Mayne gets back to his kicking form of a couple of years ago. We keep Walters and Ballantyne on the park through the season. Plus a ruckman forward.

Always difficult to know what the early draft clubs will chase. Mids, talls, backs forwards, and even more interesting is clubs with multiple picks inside 1-21:
4 picks - Blues 1,8, 11, 19
2 picks - Dons 4,5 Demons 3, 7 Crows 9, 13 Suns 6, 16 Hawks 15, 18 Dogs 20,21
1 pick Lions 2 GWS 10 Tigers 12 Saints 14 Roos 17
What does it mean? there is only 12 clubs selecting players in front of Freo.
So what are these clubs chasing reality is for lower based clubs they need to bolster there midfields and defensive stocks, suggesting that forwards may be pushed down the order.
Therefore lookout for Charlie Curnow (191)9 , Ryan Burton (191)12 , Eric Hipwood (202)14 , Harry McKay (200) 20 and Mitchell Hibberd (191) 25 (phantom draft order after height).
Personally I like Hibberd as it has him showing as HB/Mid but can kick both feet and won the kicking test , 2nd in beep test and 3rd in time trial. and at just under 6.3 in the old scale can be a key position forward. McKay is a left footed forward who ran a 10.58 in the time trial ( i do 3kms in about 18 minutes so I'm impressed; lol)
