Back to the game plan.
I think everyone would agree that our "run & stun" plan works great, the issue is the coaches (probably for reasons relating to the "it's a long season" philosophy) decided that once we had established a good lead it was time to switch to the "keep the ball out of opposition hands as much as possible" on the basis that this was less taxing on the players and if required would leave us enough run in the last quarter to respond if the opposition got close.
This seemed to work fine at the start of the season, notable examples were against the swans & the bulldogs who both threw everything at us to get close then we kicked away again. it didn't work so well at the end of the season eg the North Melbourne game.
it seemed we really struggled when teams got the jump on us, examples the second Derby and essential both the hawks games, even if the Prelim was umpire assisted as we had started really well and were looking like blowing them away in the first qtr before the umps stepped in and gave them a helping hand.
My point is our "keep the ball off them" plan doesn't work very well. So I see us going one of two ways, either we spend all summer working on the possession game, what to do when we have the ball in hand or we change our approach and try to maintain the "run & stun" for an entire game, which will involve a lot more resting of our players, both on the ground and rotating the list from game to game, something Lyon seems loath to do.
Personally I'd like to see the latter, we apparently have great midfield depth, lets use that to our advantage by starting the kids more often, giving Fyfe, Mundy, Neale et all more time forward, back or even in the coaches box watching. also the thought of smashing teams ala the hawks and eagles excites me.
