There's a tweet on the AFL trade website from Ashley Browne "Keep hearing the Saints are keen to prise Lachie Weller out of Freo with pick 14. Player is open to it, his club not so much. "

In a thin draft I'm not sure we want pick 14 for a potential gun but maybe it is the trade bait we need for the Cam Mc deal?

Thoughts (somewhere along the line there's always a price to pay).

Saw this too, not happy - I think we picked him with pick 13 just last year, so why would we trade him now after one year of development with plenty of promise for pick 14 - madness. On the other hand, a straight swap for Josh Bruce would be palatable.

I would look at it, I haven't seen anything stellar from Weller other than his grooming. We are not going to magic McCarthy here with magic beans. We have a heap of mids both outside and inside. We need KPP.
To be clear, Only do the deal if it locks in McCarthy.

Thinking it through, the worst that can happen is we draft a very similar player than Lachie if the pick can't be used to get McCarthy.

We already have a Brownlow medallist pin-up boy who is the face of Freo, so I say do the deal if it suits.

Weller and McCarthy are both early picks who seem to be delivering on that promise

Naturally clubs and supporters don't want to let them go.

If Weller is already letting footy people know he is open to leaving now I'd be ok with him being part of the McCarthy deal.

If it locks away Cam Mac then I'd do it, would be more like Pick 14 and next years 1st rounder and we keep Pick 22. or 14 and 22 and we keep next years 1st rounder.

I think Weller has loads of potential as well, but if his mind is set on going to play with his brother then we may lose him next year for a basement pick as he could nominate for the PSD if we refuse to trade.

I would definitely be making sure GWS are going to trade Cam Mac first though.

Agreed 391 if Weller wants to go best to get a good pick for him rather than waste time and money on his development.

Trade him to Saints and state clearly that we let him go because as an employer we have a responsibility for an employees welfare and in our opnion this responsibility should be foremost in all clubs minds

There's a difference in (allegedly) being open to a suggested trade vs. wanting to leave vs. even being set on leaving to join your brother. As it's been stated, the deal on it's own isn't worthwhile, bird in the hand and all that and would only be worth considering if you knew up front it might get you someone that might meet your needs better.

What if he said he was desperately homesick (for Tassie/ Gold Coast/ Melbourne), that a family reunion (especially to play alongside his brother, just like Scott Selwood) was something he desired, that he didn't really like living in Freo? Then wouldn't he have a similar argument to McCarthy?
Here's a good opportunity for that 'reversal of attitudes' in the media that others have referred to before about McCarthy, ie we'd be nasty not to free him up, whereas GWS is quite within their rights to keep Cammac.
I sense we'd be saying - he loves Freo and the Club, he's a required player, and whatever else Leon Cameron suggests we say!
Overall, however, I agree with those who say let's put him up if it means we get McCarthy for pick 14 and next year's first round pick. Otherwise, let's be just like GWS.

My understanding of matters was that he is very happy here in Perth, loves Freo and is seen as a key player for us going forward.

That is, he hasn't expressed a desire to move closer to family or is homesick and is still in contract.

Unless his trading to St Kilda will GUARANTEE the release of Cammac to us - then it's nothing but idle speculation from some over-caffeinated journo.

We are not going to get better without a better fwd structure and talent base. Pointless having the best midfield and depth in the AFL (which we've got) if you we cant kick more goals.
Weller's name has come up as his brothers at St Kilda.

Wellers name came up because the saints have tabled pick 14 for him, which makes it more than a coffee inspired musing. I have to the say the constant Photos of him and his brother on holiday may be fueling the fire a bit, but short of GWS proposing Barlow, Neale or similar in the Cam Mac trade, has any other team tabled an offer for any of our players?
