TOPIC: You can not trade Barlow

I'd have thought that Barlow being Fyfe's "partner" would have been enough!

I remember seeing a pre-season game against Geelong at Freo Oval where this new guy just kept getting the ball. That was Michael Barlow. He turned the club around. It would be a great shame to lose him. If Ross can't find the best way to use Barlow, then that is a failing of Ross. Get thinking Ross, and figure it out. I'll give you a clue though, its not as trade bait.

Has the club not indicated already that it will not be trading players in the McCarthy negotiations?

Publicly - Yes - and GWS have said McCarthy is not leaving. Which makes for a pretty short discussion. Unless you believe that there really may be some sort of negotiation occurring behind closed doors.

Now that GWS has signed Stevie J - Cam will feel less at home there - his priority for selection has just dropped one more spot...
GWS might now say they don't need Cam after all.... hoping...

I can't do the clickety thing but The Trade Whisperer tweeted earlier today that Freo haven't put Barlow up as a trade option to get McCarthy back to WA and wouldn't do so because 'he is like a son to Ross'.

' A son to Ross', a "partner" to Fyfe, it's getting like the Waltons here. Barlow is starting to sound like he is one of the family.

I think if you were grown up you might see that it takes more than buying in players by selling the fabric of the team to win a premiership.

You wouldn't trade Barlow because it's one of the dumbest things you could possibly do.

GWS have a bloke who doesn't want to be there, and an ageing serial pest worth 5 soft frees and a couple of goals a game has pinched the spot he wouldn't be working that hard to get or keep.

Giving GWS Chris Bond should be enough.

If Lyon persists in playing Barlow off the square, why keep him and why would he want to stay? We all know where he does his best work.

I am not suggesting our first two picks and Barlow is the right trade because its way too much to pay. But that is not the question here. Its would you trade Barlow. Yeah I think they would. I would before Weller thats for sure.

ROTV - I love your response. "Fabric of the Team".

Would that be the fabric of my original anchored Clive imbued home jumper, or the Steves-era sustained success man-purple chevrons?

We know who's in the leadership group at Freo, but who's in the spiritual leadership group? I've not doubt that Barlow would have a gig there.

It goes without saying that it would damage the fabric of the family if he was sold off, and would send a bad message to the other players that this team is a bunch of mercenaries, and anyone's name could come up. Crowley was bad enough - but there were factors including his age and being out of contract.

He's a long way from retiring but I'll look forward to seeing what Barlow does after footy. Will it be media or coaching? Obviously a media career is waiting, but, I've thought for a long time that he must be Lyon's protege, indeed his spiritual heir. Ross would see a lot of himself in Barlow - tough midfielder, intelligent, laconic sense of humour. I reckon, years down the track, Ross will give assistant coaching opportunities to his spiritual son in Barlow.
