TOPIC: If No McCarthy?

The latest in trade wrap says it's dead in the water and they'll stick to their promise of not letting him go.

Plus we've got no alternatives so we better bloody do some serious forwards and backs draft picking otherwise we're in for another bloody year of not being able to kick enough goals and old grandad Pav stays our #1 forward option.

Bloody Bond! Bloody Lloyd! Should never have got to this.

It's not bond or lloyds fault that

i) GWS were flush with an unreasonable number of picks when we should have drafted McCarthy
ii) that GWS are FLlcktards and won't negotiate a mutually beneficial deal.

I meant Monty that it shouldn't have got to such desperation stakes in the first place if they had recruited kpp's earlier.
Other clubs know our plight and can hold us over a barrel.

You need a balanced list through trading and drafting. We've done neither and consequently our list is skewiff.

Settle down lads. We've got plenty of talls. A. Pearce is AA Luke's replacement. Then there is Tabener, Apeness, Hannath, Zac Clarke, who can play a KPP forward role. If you read every media outlet, we're a lost cause. It's not that we can't kick goals, we keep missing them. We've got the best player in the comp, we've just picked up a young bloke from the Suns, who's a gun and contrary to popular belief, we've got the best ruckman in the comp. So, I think picking up Bennell was a priority for Freo. McCarthy would have been a bonus. So I don't know why all the doom and gloom.

PP the club has tried to recruit KPPs for some years but they either won't come or can't come. I'm not sure what this says about Freo as a desired destination club even with its recent success.

Sorry Jezza. Those guys might be tall but it doesn't make them good forwards. Clarke's been tried there for ages with little to no success. Hannah is a slow lumbering ruckman who kicks an occasional goal, Tabener may do something in the future but so far is bloody frustrating and Apeness has played two games and just spent a whole year out with knee injury. Next you'll tell me Sandi is good in the forward line because he's tall.
Yes Pearce will hopefully be a good replacement, but seriously Dawson would be lucky to get a game at another club. Johnno is 31 and often injured. That leaves Silvagni and the very average and untried Smith
None of the good clubs are as light on as we are and our lack of scoring power has hurt us for the last three years. It doesn't matter how good your midfield is if you can't score goals. We've got a much better midfield than the slime but their forward line has many great scoring options whereas we have a couple.

How many tall forwards do the Bull dogs have?
Hardly any is the answer, yet they were hailed as attacking geniuses. If they could defend they might have even won a few more games. We can defend.
Of course we would like another key forward but the Egurls proved this year you can do alright with a lack of height if you just think outside the square and tinker your game plan.
It all comes down to forward entries, quality and number and hey, maybe Tabs cant yet mark them, so lets start crumbing.
How many times was Son Son playing up the ground and not at the feet of Tabs/Pav etc. Then I look for Ballas, where is he? Oh that's him going out on a big lead like he is full forward.
How many times did we see Griff spoil Pav? Lets just do it smarter.

Who needs a forward line when your game plan stretches the midfield from CHB to FF.
Mark my words, we'll be rotating goal kickers next year.

Getting McCarthy is water under the bridge now. Time for a different Lotto ticket. We need to top up with a draft pick that can be placed in the team sooner rather than later(obviously one who is currently a regular in the VFL/SANFL) or make use of what we have at Peel. As has been pointed out by others, Hawthorn don't rely on the old fashioned full forward making leads out of the square. Its the way the current game is these days. Another solid pre-season into Apeness may provide a good foil for Pav. and change our predictability for the opposition - god I hate those long bombs onto the forwards' heads. Here's hoping we pick the right numbers.

Agree with you Rhufus about our entries into the forward line but disagree about the eagles lack of height(unless you meant their backline.)

They have the Coleman medalist in their forward line. He's capable of pack marks, one on one strength marking and quick off the mark multi leads. We don't have anyone like that. They also have some height and strength in Darling. Also McGovern was forced to go back due to injuries this year when they want him in the forward line. Pretty daunting forward line compared to us. They have Maginnes who looked more dangerous than Tabener, kicking goals whilst Darling was out early in the season who would get a game in other sides.

Then of course Hawthorn have Roughead, Gunston, Shoenmakers and Hale(retired)who regularly kick goals.

Yes, Western Bulldogs don't use a big forward line although they do have Boyd, but their game plan got found out in their last final. It will be interesting to see how they go next year when they play the top sides twice instead of the bottom sides twice like they did this year.

If you look at our forward line this year the only consistently dangerous player we had was Walters.
I also agree with what has been said about drafting someone from VFL, etc that can slot straight in, plus hoping we can develop Apeness.
Also that we need to change our game plan and how we move the ball into our forward line.

We have had 4 years to get enough KPP to replace PAV or help PAV. As of 2015 this is not yet achieved, We have thrown our mantra on recruiting the best player available at the draft and this mantra has left us with an abundance of midfielders and desperately short on quality KPP.
We are now left with pick 22 , but after compensation and academy picks is more likely to be around 27. Can i urge the recruiters to please recruit for needs and get the best possible tall available and NOT another midfielder.
It is disappointing that given all the "think tanks" , "team aways " that must go on at Freo that somehow over the last 4 years we could not manage to have a real tall alternative for PAV. Is it really that hard!!! Obviously is.

Let's assume our talls are no good and we need to start from scratch.
If you went to the 2015 draft and picked Taberner, Apeness, Z Clarke, Griffin then I'd imagine this board would be full of optimism and the bronze Bond statue would be on order.
You will never replace Pav and McCarthy would be a nice to have but is not the saviour that many seem to be seeking.
Get them kicking straight, get Mayne back on target and with our elite mids, the addition of Harley, then things aren't looking too bad.
Freo finished top of the home and away table last time I looked.
I think it's more important to get the likes of Pearce, Blakeley, Weller signed up long term. There is your future. The talls will sort themselves out.

Two of those "recruits" are ruckmen Grub. someone can correct me but the last ruckman that i can remember of who made a successful transition to a forward was Paul Salmon.
Paddy Ryder shows glimpses and is better in the forward line than Clarke or Griffin because he is more mobile. Plus he's good below his knees which none of our ruckmen/forwards are, including Hannath.
For some reason only known to our so called recruiting staff, we were not even interested in trying to get him, even though he's from W.A.

Terry Wallace In today's worst was pretty much spot on about what he called our one dimensional forward line and why we need McCarthy.
We finished the year 600pts less kicked than Hawthorn. Yes Bennell will give us some more but he's not going to be the saviour. Neither would McCarthy probably but he would have added another 40-50 goals which makes a huge difference compared to what we've had.
Do we remember Roly's wrap up at the end of the year for us? He said we need more marking options and goal scorers. Great that we got Bennell, but because we put all our eggs in the McCarthy basket he's been let down again.
