TOPIC: How do they do it

Now Hawthorn have entered the race for Carlisle. My guess is that they will get him. This is beginning to get a little bit too regular for my liking, their ability to identify and successfully target players that will improve their team is extraordinary.
Also wondering how well the AFL is actually going at balancing the comp. Lets face it the draft hasn't really made that big a difference for clubs like Carlton & Melbourne. Jury is still out on whether or not all of the draft concessions given to GWS & Gold Coast will actually result in success.
Maybe there needs to be more work put into the possibility of salary cap for football departments.
Having said that I am enjoying the success that is coming now that we have joined the ranks of those powerful clubs, but we are struggling to keep up with Hawthorn.

You want to bring in more rules because Hawthorn have shown interest in doing a trade?

Hawthorn ever haven't done anything extraordinary. They've just executed it well.

Why not Shane they changed the rules because Sydney were going well.
But I beg to differ, I think that what Hawthorn has managed to achieve since 2008 has been extraordinary, as in beyond the ordinary maybe even exceptional. I admire them and agree they have executed very well.
Why do clubs protest so much about giving a club like Melbourne a priority pick they will just draft that player away from them later.

I have no doubt Rosich issued an edict to never get fleeced on a deal again. The industry seems to have matured from trying to play silly buggers for 90 per cent of the period and is immediately offering up what is reasonable on the basis a) clubs are not stupid b) what goes around comes around.

By playing a game no one else is playing we really aren't looking that clever. 10 years behind again Freo.

Reckon Rhufus is onto something when he says that the Western Australian clubs (read interstate) need to go hard after any West Aussies that become available making Victorian clubs hesitant to draft them.
Victorian clubs are looking like they have an advantage when it comes to negotiations in being able to offer players the ability to play at home most weeks, on the MCG, games like the Anzac clash.
I fully appreciate how well Hawthorn have done what they have done, and part of me says that this should not be penalised. The other part agrees with the principal of an even competition with every team a genuine chance of sometime winning the premiership. At the moment it seems like 3 clubs (Hawthorn, Geelong & Collingwood) seem to be able to pillage the best players from the weaker clubs.

They lure players to their club because of their success, every player wants to play in a grand final and win one. I think it is very smart by hawthorn to be honest

Given the advantages it gives you during the trading season, I don't know why every club isn't trying to win a premiership

I think they should even up the competition based on travel.
Therefore clubs from the West will get more home games, like 14 home, 8 away and they should have the option to choose whether they will play down in Tassie or not.

Most of the available players are over east. Hawks are the most successful club since Brisbane and are probably more consistently successful. Hawks are in Vic. The maths isn't that hard.

I think the last time Hawthorn kept their first round pick for the draft was in 2010, pick 19 Isaac Smith.
That is, they are more than happy to trade away their first round picks (admittedly they have generally been in the late teens to twenties).

Meanwhile Freo have had a very poor record keeping and using their round 1 draft picks during that time. By my calculations, worse than any other AFL club. Morabito (2009 pick 4), Sheridan (2011 pick 16) and Crozier (2011 pick 20) are our only Round 1 picks who have played more than 10 career games since 2008 (when we got Stephen Hill pick 3). That is, a total of 116 career games (72 from Sheridan & Crozier) from 8 Round 1 National Draft picks since 2008.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

Their formula is pretty simple: trade picks for known talent that fills holes in the list (Gibson, Hale, McEvoy, Lake, Frawley) interestingly all big men who usually take longer to develop so are a risky draft proposition, then use later picks on raw talent which may or may not come off (little Hill & Dayle Garlett come to mind) its not their fault other teams leave this sort of talent laying around in the mid 30s in the draft

They draft good players, then when they need to fill a hole they can off load players like Jed Anderson, Ben McGlynn, Josh Kennedy, and Gilham. They have also managed to offload duds like Lisle, Renouf, Cheney and Sierakowski.
