This is somewhat philosophical. I think my original point was that there is a big gap between potential and reality and that there are a number of variables that feed into the ability to bridge that gap (beyond raw talent).

Walters is a great story. But I don't think anyone could have reliably said that the story would have turned out great at any stage.

I'd like to think the recruiters saw both Walters raw talent and a level of determination which led to his drafting. Once he went "off the rails" and got pushed, that determination came to the fore.

However who is to say this is really the case?

I remember reading an article where Fyfe said a similar thing. From memory, he was knocking around in yr 10 and not making the most of his talents and playing in 2nd and 3rd grade. He was then confronted by his teachers and parents and that has set him on the course to his current stardom.

SS if Walters didn't have "character" then he would still be playing footy, but in a country comp or 11th grade amatuers. It is the character of the man that saw him turn himself around and make something of his talent. We have all played with or against many players who were wasted talents, because they didn't have the character to do the hard work required to stay at the top level of footy. Talent will only get you to the big league. It is "character" that will keep you their. Although there are a few exceptions to that rule, chemicals kept them there.
