TOPIC: On Potential

Shane - depends how you define raw talent and how it all fits in.

I could define talent in a number of different areas. E.g. good kicking, good handballing, strength, ability to read the play, strong marking, speed, endurance, contested ball winning, ability to spoil (Zac) etc.

Coming into a club, a youngster may excel in 2 or 3 of these areas. To be a consistent week in / week out performer he needs to excel in say 5. To be elite, maybe 8.

So I go back to the original point, the recruiter needs to assess how well a kid can develop. What could be, not what is.

I reckon Deboer is a great example. He is a guy with clear deficiencies when he started, but clearly with a work ethic where he has been able to take other parts of his game up to being a solid contributor.

The other aspect is fitness.
They are hyping up some kid at Peel who ran a record trial over 3 kms and has now suddenly jumped into contention for the draft.
Im reading that and thinkin whoa, caution needed.

What they are saying is this kid didn't deserve a second look based on how he can play footy but gee hes a great athlete.
What Im thinking is : there might not be too much upside here if he is already at AFL elite fitness levels.

Sometimes maybe we should look at unadulterated talent and then train em up to get fit. You can get fit but not sure you can get talent.

Yeah I reckon he would be a good get if Freo are putting a team in the 3000 metres at the 2020 Olympics, but I cant see him picking up an average of 10 contested possessions every week in 2017 playing footy for Freo, based solely on his 3 km time trial results. Just out of interest, where did Paul Haselby rank in the 3 km time trial in his year?

Yeah. You can get a regular gig in an AFL side even with weaknesses. Remember Rowan Jones at the slime? Couldn't kick, but played a pivotal role for them (as well as being the slime supporters best escaped goat of all time).

Kicking is one thing Fyfe needs to work on. At least after his legs are all in one piece again. But I'd like to think that all our players are constantly working on their weaknesses. It surely must demoralise an opposition when you cover a players inevitable swing to get the ball onto their favourite foot, only for them to go the other way and deliver a beautiful pass. D Pearce - take note.

I think (could be wrong?) it's a fairly simple equation;

Commitment being a subset of Character, whatever that means, appears to be some disagreement on the matter?

True Talent + Total Commitment = Premier Performer (e.g. Fyfe, Hill, Pavlich)
Total Commitment + Some Talent = Good Performer (Suban, Crowls, Deboar)
True Talent + Some Commitment = Inconsistent Performer (Bennell, based on currently reported history anyway)
True Talent + Little Commitment = Dud (Sylvia - Apparently?, using the term TT based on his original draft position)

What do you think?

Going back to what Roger Rocks said, and I mean no offence to him but - I don't care where people went to school, but if Hodge and Mitchell were to play for the Dockers, I would find a different club to support.

And then there are jeans. Some fade quickly badly or fit better with age. Sometimes the pocket(s) wear out, are the wrong shape or need a little mending from time to time. Even the best brands go out of fashion or like a ford from the factory after a big loss might not be quite up to chop. Sometimes the ugly duckling can emerge with all the grace and skill. Somethings you have no control over whatsoever. It's just luck.

So Fyfe started out as a pair of stone wash and has become a pair of DolceGabbana dark denim tapered but casual fit?

CA, I understood up to stone wash. The rest was lost on me. Everyone can appreciate a nice pair of slacks though...

Ricco, I wonder: does Walters have character? If so, did he have it prior to being sent back to the Swans? If he didn't, then how did he get it? And if he did, I'm not really sure what character is, how you identify it, or why it's so important.

I'd say Walters passed the character test with flying colours. He faced up to his situation, a true test of character and has become an outstanding player and I hate to use the word role model. Bears out what has been previously said re character.

I had to google that Dr Sleep. I think Dawson would be our version of a crimplene safari suit.

Just trying to get a handle on this, maynefan. Did Walters have character before he was sent to the Swans, or is his character something that kicked in only after he was banished? What was character's role in producing the attitude/performance that (in Lyon's eyes at least) warranted the effective demotion?

Lest this be confused for an attack on Walters, let me insist that it's not. Not to go all Lyon-speak on us, but it seems to me that "character" is an empty idea. It's Walter's talent that makes him the brilliant footballer he is. What people want to call "character" is something he acquired by being confronted with the prospect of not getting the opportunity to do what he does best.
