TOPIC: Free Agency

Brought in to appease the player association after they threatened to test whether it was restraint of trade.

Its completely undermining the other equalization policies the AFL has in place. There is a legitimate risk Gillon M does not see another winner of a premiership during his term other than Hawthorn.

Scrap it and let the players take the game to court lets see how that works for them.

The AFL likes it because it massively advantages the Victorian clubs. Call me a cynic but you won't see it changed any time soon.

That's why we have to target all the WA boys and target them hard. Make the Vics think twice about EVER recruiting a player from WA - just not worth the risk.

I heard someone (might have been that tool The Ox) on SEN the other day asking Bartlett whether the day has come when its now too risky drafting WA players. Same sort of tone in their voices when they were contemplating a Derby GF. Fear and loathing.

Im happy for the Vic clubs to keep the Victorian boys and we keep our own. Anyway lets start with our own Peel product in Harley and then procede on to Sunshine and go from there.

Hogans the next big big fish to get in two years. There needs to be a master plan. Hypen your man Bondy the man for the job?!

This may be a bit off the topic but I'm sure it's related.
With the recruiting of players at hawthorn over the last few years the Hawks have managed to get the following players through free agency or otherwise: Frawley Mcevoy Burgoyne Hale Lake etc.
My question is how do they keep triple and quadruple premiership players under the salary cap?

When you're pulling 11 large a year from the pokies, there's always a way.

At this rate Hodgeyy Mitchellyy and Lewisyy will be spending lots of time on the slots to get a piece of the action.
And how much does the Tasmanian Govt pay into their coffers?
Seems like a story of troughs and snouts.

Dockerplus, I guess guys accept lower pay in return for a premiership.

And this is how arse about free agency is, players are leaving for a flag not because their ability to earn more income is compromised.

They need to scrap it and stare down the AFLPA and their weasel managers.

None of Hawthorn's top 10 players (as measured by their B&F) were free agents, and they lost Buddy to free agency. By way of comparison, D Pearce was in our top 10 and we got him as a free agent. We haven't lost anyone.

The secret to winning premierships is still to draft the best talent, develop them well, and get the best coach to tell them what to do.

Keeping the integrity of the league intact is of the utmost importance, but players should be free to move after 8 years of service. Think about how long you have been at your current employer. I changed jobs recently, and if someone told me I had to be at the mercy of a 'system' I had little control over for 8 years, I would not be happy about. But after being flung to the four winds for that 8 years, I reckon I would feel like I should go wherever I damn well please.

A couple of players have taken pay cuts to play for Hawthorn to try to win a premiership. They could have just as easily given up money to play in a team that was knocked out of the finals. I'm not sure you can use the Hawks excellence as a reason to get rid of the system. If North won, would people would people make the same argument?

And the Hawks have only gotten Frawley via free agency. The rest were trades.

Brian Lake?

The secret to winning flags is not solely the draft - its a mixture of drafting, savvy trading and free agency.

Free agency is a massive free kick that lends itself to the stronger clubs. Forget Danyle Pearce, its the A listed players in question finishing up at the same clubs giving them a chance to win a flag.

Dangerfield, why has he left? Was it commercial reasons?

If North had won then the argument that free agency benefits the Vic teams would have been strengthened given they picked up Higgins (3rd in their B&F this year) and Waite last year and Dal Santo the year before as free agents.

"Lake, along with pick 27, were traded to the Hawthorn Football Club at the end of the 2012 season during the trade period, in return for picks 21 and 43"

The Doggies got Hrovat with pick 21, they traded 43 to the Eagles for Koby Stevens. The Eagles traded picks 40 and 43 to the Saints for Cripps and pick 45.

The Hawks sent pick 27 with Gilham to GWS for Jed Anderson and picks 28 and 66.

They used pick 28 on Tim O'Brien

So kinda it was Lake and Anderson for Hrovat and Stevens ....kinda

So the Hawks no longer have Lake and Anderson (most likely) and the Dogs have gotten only 20 odd games from Hrovat
