TOPIC: Hogan

Hogan has put a contract discussion on the table with Melbourne. The interesting thing is this is not being driven by Melbourne its been driven by Hogan (or more correctly his manager). Now from the outside this looks like he wants to stay at Melbourne. But when you look a bit deeper you realise that he has 2 years to run of his existing contract. So why the extension at this time?
He could be keen to stay at Melbourne where he wont be playing serious finals for 6 years. He could be just milking it for more bucks. OR
He has been approached by a third party (That being Freo) with a large multi year offer.
I rang up trade radio yesterday and spoke to Barrett and Wallace and put it to them. They reckon I could "take it to the bank" (1.56.05) that there was an offer from Freo. Nobody waits till the last year of contracts to start talking these days.

Further details revealed by Hogan; he had requested and had a briefing from Paul Roos about where the club was going and what they are planning. Sounds like he's still needing a bit of reassuring.

His manger is probably trying to get a home loan.

Why would he sign a contract extension now? If he fulfills his promise over the next two years at Melbourne he would surely get more money than if he signed now. Unless Melbourne are that desperate they are prepared to pay well overs now. Either way, when he spoke earlier in the year he sounded awfully like someone that was going to leave when his contract was up.
If we have offered him a great deal and he has indicated he wants to come home then his manager and chris bond, yes you again chris, should be nailing home the importance of not signing anything.

Then we better not use our 1st picks on McCarthy or pay him $700K per year or we will not be able to afford Hogan

I don't think any of this is what Melbourne wants. They want to talk to him after they've won a few games in a row next year and do the big sell. They don't want to talk about contracts in the auction house which is what trade week is. They will also hope that by then we have gone and grabbed ourself another player and are not so keen.

Plenty of stuff going on. Think big. The club did with Lyon Imagine - Hogan, McCarthy and Bennell, Think all three. Statue of Chris Bond at either cock-burn or the new stadium, screw it at both.

I'd give away all our draft picks for a year to get Phil Smart back. Or pay him 700 extra large instead.

Phil was Smart

Yeah, managers are the real beneficiaries of the mega-long contracts, as they lock themselves in for a cut of that over the contracted period.

It did seem to me that it was less about signing a contract and more about sounding them out about future directions (maybe to establish how much he should entertain some serious offers).

You'd think any potential suitors would want some early indications from Hogan leading into this trade period, so they have some idea of how many kitchen sinks they should throw into any speculative deals and how many to keep in reserve for him.

These next few months must be the only time that Bondy works. I swear I've never read his name so much as I do at this end of the season.

I wonder what his KPI's are?

In fairness to Bond, he probably spends a fair bit of time during the season deciding whether to appeal MRP decisions. Based on his track record, he could save himself the trouble and flip a coin, with better results.

We also have a reasonable record in retaining players, and locking in existing players to good contracts. Getting Sandi and Pav on to one year deals was a good result, and set a good precedent; and locking Fyfe, Hill, Walters etc on long-term deals on fair money was a very good result. So I assume that keeps him busy.

Its so important that Freo continue to target these West Australians. We need to either get them or at least jack their contracts up to astronomical levels so the opposition have little left in the cap.
I am envisioning within a few years no Vic club will take our WA champs as it will be too risky, them wanting to come home. Just got to get some good results and the Bennels and McCarthys and Hogans will be available to us as they become just too risky for the Vic clubs to draft.

Jesse is Melbourne's big hope story. They need to be seen to be doing everything in their powers to keep him so that the Land Rover set by memberships next year. Smart tactic really.
Lets's hope he sees through all the BS and comes back home.

At least McCarthy wants to come home. Who says Hogan does?

Melbourne are obviously planning to do a Port Power / WCE before decending into crapulence again and Hogan is part of the plan.

They are both contracted for 2 years and neither of them are coming to Freo unless their clubs allow it.

So keep dreaming about Hogan everyone because he may as well be Buddy Franklin or Jarrod Roughead, he's not coming!
