Seeking a better understanding of trade rules.

A common scenario seems to be a contracted player decides they want to move clubs before their contract has expired. In the situation the club does not want to lose this player I understand they are under no obligation to make a trade with the players club of choice.

However it seems in nearly all cases the clubs seek to get a trade deal done i.e. the power is with the player. For the reason clubs don't want a player on the list that would rather be elsewhere.

In the situation where a contracted player does not want to leave can the club still have discussions with another club about a potential trade and then negotiate with the player? For example if a trade deal can be done whereby a player could earn more elsewhere if he agrees to be traded can the clubs facilitate this prior to the player having knowledge the club would like to trade him?

Well I don't know them off the top of my head but listening to Pav on Nova this morning he mentioned that back in 2001 (he had a bad season and missed that parents) he had a word with Schwab saying that he was aware he is still in contract but should Freo want to do some sort of swap with any of the SA teams he would be happy enough being traded back. I was shocked and sad to hear that but, hey, water under the bridge and remember he was only little at the time.

Now in the case of a club flat out trading players. I believe this is what happened with Broughton. He didn't want to go but Freo wanted to trade and put Broughton on the table. I don't think players have a choice as to whether they get traded or not. Which totally sounds dodgy.

In summary I probably didn't help you out at all but this is one of the reasons I don't really follow all this trading shlemockle. I have no idea what's going on.

They can discuss whatever they want but the player still has to agree to the trade and terms with the new club.

Even an out of contract player has to agree to a trade. The difference being that if you have a contract you can stay and if you don't have a contract you have to nominate for the draft.
