TOPIC: Cyril Rioli

Serious question. I've never even heard any reasoning about why Freo chose to pass on Cyril and instead picked up Rhys Palmer in the same draft at #7. Yes, Rhys went on to win the Rising Star, but we all know how their two careers are turning out.

Can anyone enlighten as to why Freo passed on Cyril?* Did we not rate him? Did Cyril not want to be drafted by Freo? Yes, he's from the NT and grew up in Victoria, but you would think we would have shown some interest given the link to Maurice Rioli.

*Yes, I know many other clubs did too.

Because Palmer was a better player and what we needed instead of a forward pocket. Before Palmer did his knee his pace and agility had him able to doge through traffic and read the footy beautifully (while his disposal was pretty good despite him constantly using his non preferred foot and resultingly butchering a few kicks). He won the rising star for a reason but was never the same after the knee injury and it showed.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I played football with a future Hawks player who eventually became one of their recruiting officers.

When a group of us caught up he gave some small snippets and insights into how and why they recruited certain players. How they managed to snare Franklin and Roughead and dupe Richmond into taking Tambling.

Apparently Rioli went to some school/college in Melbourne and only ever wanted to play for a Melbourne club and particularly Hawthorn. I don't know if we ever interviewed him but apparently he was deliberately unco-operative and disinterested when interviewed by Neil Craig at Adelaide in an effort to put them off drafting him.

He also mentioned that one of the first thing that Hawthorn looked at was a player's kicking skills and ball use and this was the reason they weren't interested in Palmer or De Boer.

There's no one science for recruiting.
The hindsight game maybe fun but, heck Fyfe wasn't even Freo's first pick, so all 16 clubs got that one wrong.
Hawthorn drafted Zac Dawson in 2003 and had him until saints took him off their hands in 2009.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

Good story Agarn
Particularly the bit about how the Hawks # 1 priority when looking at a player is kicking skills. Look how that's worked out for them.
Something our recruiters might learn from
