The substance he pleaded guilty to taking was on a list of specified substances, which are there because they pose a risk to an athlete's health on game day, not because they are.performance enhancing.

If it was performance enhancing he would of gotten at least a two year ban.

All shades of grey though really, innit? I've heard it said that if it helps you play, then its performance enhancing. Eg, if you smoke weed before competition because it helps you relax/overcome nerves, then its performance enhancing.

Shane that argument wouldn't of held much water if it was a PED he was done for, given the agent carrying it was intentionally ingested. It was listed as a specified substance which under last years guidelines (which they have since changed under the new 2015 amendments) were substances banned mainly for health reasons.

Generally substances whose function is primarily restorative (i.e. enable a return to performance approximating the athlete's usual "natural" level of performance) are not considered performance enhancing. This would include pain killers (whose benefits are often accompanied by side effects which can be harmful to performance, such as numbing and slowed reflexes).

He has to be able to argue that it wasn't to enhance his performance, it doesn't matter what the substance is. Daniel Chick's asthma drug is only consider to enhance your performance if you don't have a prescription for it.

But the point is, it's a catch all term for a positive drug test.
