TOPIC: McCarthy

I admit I haven’t seen much of McCarthy (or GWS in general). They say stats are for people who haven’t seen the games, but his stats aren’t great.

1.8 goals, 3.6 marks, 9 touches. Compare that to a truly elite key forward at the same age at the same position on a worse team in Jesse Hogan: 2.2 goals, 6.7 marks, 13 touches.

There are a couple of things that worry me. First, he’s not big (193cm). Second, he’s not taking heaps of marks. Third, he’s only ever had to play on the second best defender, in a forward line where everyone should rightly be worried about Cameron.

If the Giants have refused two (late) first round picks, can someone who has seen a bit of him play let me know why he’s that good a player (as opposed to why we need him so much).

I think the simple answer to that is that we just don't have anyone else, and that McCarthy has shown that he is capable of kicking bags (1 5-goal game and 2 4-goal games). If Pav is to retire as expected, Tabs may have to lead our attack, which isn't going to instill a hell of a lot of confidence within most of us. However, if we do get McCarthy, and Fyfe do spend more time in our forward 50, I think a 3-prong attack with Fyfe, McCarthy and Tabs, along with our little fellas in Sonson and Ballas, will give our attack a far more different and mobile look to it...

Question remains though - what are we willing to part with to get him over? If GWS has already dismissed 2 first round picks, how much more do we have to give to sweeten the deal before it gets to be too much?

It should be noted amongst those stats Morgan that McCarthy was subbed in a lot of those games which are going to hurt his averages. I watched a fair bit of him and he is a lead up target who moves fantastically at ground level. He plays a similar style to Pav but doesn't yet have the physical build like him to be that number 1 key forward. Another pre season might do it but he has more height and a greater leap than Pav does which should allow him to assume the mantle relatively quickly.

His kicking looks a little awkward at times but is highly accurate and he seems to have quite the tank on him for a young KPP. He still has tonnes of growth in him both in physical abilities and learning the game which is the main thing that excites me.

*Ignore that you beaut Morgan, was supposed to hit reply!
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

2 first round picks and Crozier?
Then how do we get Harley?
Its a bit sad that no one mentions Mayne when talking about our forward line anymore.
Has he become that irrelevant? If so, then trade him.
If not teach him how to lead, mark and kick....again.
We need a totally different forward line structure and that starts with saying goodbye to Suma.
Lets be honest our forward line has always been our weak point.
Why not go after an ex Hawks forward coach or similar???
Next year could go either way...

Get him.

He drilled them from 50+ to win games under pressure at 18s

This in his first AFL game.

Check the score, the mark and the Goal.

Nothing I have seen since makes me concerned he is not a rolled gold 200 game forward.

McCarthy is part of the solution. We're never going to get another Pav. Melbourne should be de-registered if they let Hogan go for anything.

Just get him, even if we pay overs (that is not part of our List Management Model).

Our forward line needs a number of good talls and smalls. We've got the smalls aready, play Tabs, McCarthy and one other as mobile marking talls.

The third tall should be ... Mundy. Leave Fyfe in the middle, send old-man Mundy forward. Long kick, moves well, is as tall as Pav, 10kg lighter.

He's no superstar Morgan, I think he will be like a Jay Schultz. Very servicable.

But Bond's conservatism resultant from not wanting to pay overs for a player has left the club with just a hint of desperation and opposing clubs know this.

He will be paying overs.

One thing though 193cms is pushing 6ft 4, tall enough.Taller than Pav.

You'd definitely get him with an idea to have him as part of a multi-pronged attack, probably as the second KPP. The comparison is best placed against Mayne really and for me Mayne is a very sore point at the present time.

That's a good point you raised there Hypen.

The problem is bonds conservatism is coupled with an over valuing of first round picks.

Riddle me this, would you swap our last four first rounders for hogan?

I'd offer Melbourne two first and two second rounders.

Jefferys
There was a passage of play on Friday night in the second quarter (not long after Hale's dropping the ball non-decision at around 11mins) where Mayne followed the ball all the way out of Freo's forward 50m to make a desperate tackle deep in defence followed by a htb for Sheridan and stopped a definite Hawks score. The ball quickly returned to the other end for a set shot goal for Hill.

Chopper should definitely not be on the trade table, just needs to go back to kicking school. My son would not be only one devastated if he leaves.

I think you have a point there Jeffreys, but as much as we admire his tackling it's hard for him to kick goals when he's laying tackles in the backline.

I'm sorry Jefferys, but in no way does a tackle offset a miss of an absolute deadset gimme. And Mayne seems to do those on a regular basis these days. As Agarn says, tackling's just a wee bit of a lesser commodity than goal kicking. Maybe your son could switch allegiances to Mundy.
