I for one was very dissapointed in the "match commitee's" decision to drop A Pearce in favour of Dawson when he became available at the end of the year, given that for a large chunk of the season he held down the backline with AA Luke and ibbo taking the opp ruckman! Personally I thought either Pearce or even a slightly proppy Luke would have offere more than the fist in both out finals. For me Dawson's only saving grace used to be that he timed running off his man to apply pressure to the ball carrier really well, this year he seemed to have lost his game sense and was stuck in no mans land as the ball sailed over his head to his now unmanned forward way too often.

I don't think A Pearce was dropped at all. He was rested in Round 22, brought back in for Round 23 and after that couldn't be considered because of a torn calf.

Dawson is an Easy Target for criticism. Always has been. I could list some of his football faults that very few would argue against, but he defends well.
If you watch Freo games and look at how the opposition get their goals, you'll see that very few of them have anything to do with Dawson. Most of the time Dawson will be involved, it will be because he has done the team thing of leaving his man to put pressure on the ball carrier, questionable free kicks against and occasionally he is out marked (usually to the fault of his peers leaving him one on one, something he doesn't do to his peers, when he has a choice). Until A.Pearce and others are definitely better than Dawson, IMO, he deserves his spot in the team.
(NB: I'm a huge fan of A.Pearce but I don't think his foot skills are currently any better than Dawson's.)

Geez Dockerknockers, we will keep playing Dawson for the simple fact that we don't have depth with talls in defence, but you can't defend him for that effort against his ex-team mate McEvoy, and say it was the fault of Mzungu and Sutcliffe for leaving him one-on-one, as you did in another post.

Dawson was side by side, the ball wasn't kicked to any significant advantage and McEvoy just pushed him aside like Dawson was a first year player. Ragdolling, is what they call it. A similar incident happened in the 2013 GF when he was pushed aside by Gunston.

I also thought Johnson was too loose on occasions in the 1st half, zoning off on Shoenmakers.

Together, both of them as key defenders were a little too rusty when it came to the amount of game time they played leading into finals, as was evident in some of the lead up games - Johnson in the Derby, Dawson vs North Melbourne. Maybe they should have both played against Port Adelaide in round 23.

Johnson was too loose because he couldn't run fast. He wouldn't have played like that if fully fit. It was a gamble we took when we played him.

CB, as I said, Dawson is the easy target for criticism.
The McEvoy goal came from Gibson's i50 after some very poor checking by Walters when Gibson marked. McEvoy (10kgs heavier and taller) outmuscles Dawson in a one on one while Mzungu who first looked like he was going to sprint to the ball drop chooses to block Shiels. The three closest defenders to Dawson were Mzungu, Sutcliffe (too busy shadowing Bruest to worry about what the ball was doing) and Sheridan (on Puopolo's toes).
So we had Mzungu, Sutcliffe and Sheridan all running around the ball more worried about Hawthorn forwards rather than getting to the contest and you think Dawson's lost battle is the biggest issue.

BTW, I saw a similar ragdollIng done on Fyfe by Hodge in Tassie. It happens to the best of them.

So your defense of Dawson is other players should have handled everything and left Dawson out of it?! I'm pretty sure SCOS or APearce could have done that while providing much better rebound and less of an obstruction to team mates.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

There's value in Zac yet, as the last line of defence and plays hard footy against Superstars being delivered the ball and on So many occasions he has come out on top. His style of play is not as stylish or commanding is Luke's but few are comparable! What he is, is effective in his role, every player on the ground needs support , even Fyfe so why should the fist be any different? Defence has no glory of goals and you have to watch the player and the flow of the ball when both are doing their best to work against you - it's impossible to get it right every time.
In the few games he played this year he was no different to most except the exceptional few. unfortunately his biggest problem is that like Ballas (and Suban) the umps see him as an easy point to disrupt the teams equilibrium and flow.
Move unfortunately the opposition players know this as well so they use it and often the bloke is caught in a no win position. Then every one want is to crucify him on those occasions where he did not come out on top, just consider how many players and defensive points did the ball get past before Zac enters the Fray?

I think the commentators in last week's game summed it up pretty well when they said that you can't really afford to have a player in your side that doesn't really want to get the ball.
There's not a player in the two sides tomorrow that does not either carry the ball and provide run out of the backline or are good intercept marks.
He's neither. If he played for another side we would be calling him a bollard.

Corp A.
A part from a very few docker players, when have the Commentators got anything supportive to say about Freo?
Furthermore, when don't they say how fabulous the two sides playing tomorrow are?

Name a side in the top 8 and then the player within that side you would drop for ZacD.

Well, I've defended Zac in the past, but now I've kind of turned full circle.
Dawson - You're ruining footy for me.
I get nervous when you are in the vicinity of the ball.
I can't look when the ball is in your hands.
I fear for the lives of those you handball it to.
You can't kick.
You can't mark.
You're just tall and have a big fist, which can be used for other things outside of football. (eg boxing, knocking on doors, playing knuckles etc)

Dawson has been lyon lock-in for the stock spoil and reset play in defence.

If Freo are going to find a way to be more attacking, then this sort of safe conservative play should probably be rethought. Defensive structures are already pretty sound, whether he's in or out. We need rebound out of defence, not stoppages.

Look lots of us feel really uncomfortable about bagging the Fist. I feel sorry for him as none of this is really his fault. But his selection is SYMPTOMATIC of our defensive mind set.

Im not suggesting we throw away defence but the sooner we give up on the spare man in defence and give our forwards a real chance by playing equal numbers, the better.
