Didn't Ross say post-match Hawks that our salary cap prevented us from getting any of these big-money players - or words to that effect? He (and we) would like one or two but we can't offer enough to entice them here. I was surprised to hear him say that with Luke going, Sylvia gone and Pav, Crowls and Morabito undecided.

McCarthys manager has stated that he still wants out and "..... he will absolutely be going through the trade process with Fremantle."
Giants have rejected Freo's offer of 2 x first round picks, (one this year and one next year) and have stated that they need quality players not picks.

Sounds like the game is afoot.

The Freo contingent are to talk with Bennell before the weekend.

Forget about the inability to get big names across here and remember that it is the recruiting staff's job to have a balanced list with enough talent coming through in all areas.
When you just draft midfielders it can't be and isn't balanced. When your best forward and backman are retiring and there is little to nothing to replace them then you ha haven't done your job.

Trade Barlow to GWS for McCarthy. His currency is dropping and being a mature age recruit he is only good for another 2-3 years. We could then bring up Weller, Blakely or Langdon to fill that spot.

The biggest issue with Bennell is finding compensation for GC. We won't have much to trade after the McCarthy deal so our only chance is for Bennell to declare WA the only place he wants to go. We can't compete with Richmond at the trade table (definitely not with Bond's unwillingness to trade anything of value) so this wining and dining is a massive blow to our chances of securing him.
