Morgan, are you writing Campbell and Hayden Kennedy's lines for them?

The systemic bias shows up in who is chosen to officiate our games.

Why does the AFL have to choose umpires? It just leaves them open to the perception of bias. If they aren't doing anything wrong, they won't mind if umpires (including the 4th one hiding in the stands) are chosen at random.

If the AFL insist that at least one "experienced" umpire needs to be at each game, then let them give the criteria by which "experience" is defined, and have a pool of such umpires. So on random draw from the "experienced" umps, and 2 (or 3 if someone is hiding in the stands) chosen from the rest.

When kids sit their year 12 exams, the exam scripts are assigned to markers at random. The marker does not know the identity of the student they are marking. Hence no perception of bias. Its not that hard.

I'm more inclined to think that there is an unconscious bias being applied rather than any conscious, systemic bias on the part of umpires or those who select them. I believe that the umpires honestly think that they are fair and impartial. And yet we consitently get decisions going against us. Oftentimes appalingly so.

Is it a case of being a self-fulfilling prophecy? A club has a reputation for certain acts, so decisions go against them, which gives them a reputation for certain acts...

Could it be the colour of our uniform?

Interesting clicky thing

I'd love to see some free kick stats when we are wearing our away jumper vs. the darker one.

At any rate, I want to know what the AFL is doing about identifying unconscious bias, and what training they provide umpires in overcoming it. I suspect not much is being done at all.

I've said it before. When you have at least 2 umps I know of, where Freo never win a free kick count, then there's something going on. Even when they're evening up the count after half time, we still never get a + result. That is not random.

Winning or losing total counts should be pretty random. Even if you're winning only a few. Plus of course, it's when and where they're paid that has influence on a game.

Yeah, perhaps the word 'systematic' is a bit strong.

I think there are two levels operating: an allegation that umpires are consistently biased against Freo, and an allegation that there is part of the system that is intentionally or unintentional letting Freo down at a systemic level.

RR, the umpire spread is actually quite even, with slightly more representation from the local umpires.

When the umpire in the stands says "we are all over the Ballantyne stuff" it doesn't sound too subconscious to me unless the bloke's talking in his sleep.
Now I think that needs an explanation especially when he continues on with a "well done". To me it sounds a bit like: mission accomplished.

What I find most insidious and disturbing about that feed, is the implication players like Ballantyne are to be kept on some sort of lease via the whistle. What exactly do they think is going to happen if they don't 'reign things in before they start'?

How about they just pay things as they transpire, instead of adding their own extra weighting to them, which they are clearly doing. They're paid to umpire a game, not manipulate player behaviour with over use of the whistle.

Why are the umpires even getting feedback from somebody in the stands??
Arent they in the best position to see things and make their own minds up?

Having someone external who can talk to the umpires strikes me as an open door for corruption.

A mad old bloke once said: Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.

The AFL see no reason to apply any simplicity to anything. They make everything as complicated as possible and then make excuses for why it doesn't work, and stick with it. Widgets on goal umpires heads only makes them fearful of making a decision, when it's bloody obvious from the blurred slo mo footage of the riveting and dramatic reviews, that no one but them can see anything useful.

Same with having someone direct umpires from off the ground. Perhaps we are over-thinking their bias and ineptitude, and they can't concentrate on what they're do for some idiot wittering in their earpieces about whether Ballantyne is about to scratch his own backside 50m off the ball, or do something... 'sinister'.

I've been directing umpires from the stands for years.

Doesn't seem to have had any impact though ...

I wish Ballas had simply created an option by running into space and NOT the opposition. Doing that would have been a better team option it would have made Hawthorn players try to man him up.

I did not like Stevics decision, but I did not Ballas decision either.

The FBI have not yet charged Balla's for JFK's assassination, but the way things are going they will soon have all the evidence and all the credible witnesses they need. Get a good lawyer Balla's , you'll need one.
