Ross Lyon has problems. He has to make changes to his Dockers list and playing style. Alastair Clarkson's brown and gold boys are built from a rock-solid base of courage and full-on effort, but are topped off by a huge chunk of class and composure. They will win a third premiership in a row because they are coached by the best in the business and have superb on-field leadership from Luke Hodge and Sam Mitchell.

Fremantle's grunt could never be questioned, but their depth of quality falls away significantly. Their last six players get exposed on the big stage and they aren't good enough for this team to win a premiership.

not far off the mark - but as i said elsewhere it might not be our bottom 6 but our top six who were the biggest disappointments

I also think walls is spot on, alex Pearce, alex silvagni and tanner smith all give some tall man options in defence, De boer and Mzungu along with Barlow should be offered up as trade bait to get Bennell, Jetta and either McCarthy or Hogan, Zac Clarke should also be given up as we have hannath griffen and taberner who can all develop. We have a solid young group in langdon, weller, blakely, grey and apeness who are developing nicely. So i think we have options.

Agree with most except Ballantyne, he gets targeted as much as he niggles, the difference being umpires only penalise him these days.

I've run out of patience with Dawson, we were a better team - more attacking - with him out of the side. If he did his job it'd be alright but he gives away too many frees.

Probably right about Barlow as much as he has been fantastic for us, especially after that horrible broken leg (thanks for the parting gift Palmer), but he is not the player he was 2 years ago. Bennell would be a pretty handy replacement.

Blakey, Weller, Langdon & Grey all need sustained time at the elite level if they're to get there themselves. De Boer, Sutcliffe & Mayne can't be relied upon to kick clutch goals and are not top shelf disposers either.

McCarthy in the forward line with Taberner after another pre-season in the gym should improve our I50 to goal ratio, particularly when Walters and Ballas can play the crumbling, small forward roles rather than marking target. Throw in Fyfe spending more time in the forward line with another cut in rotations coming and we'd look ok down there.

Grab Lueunberger as cover for one of Sandi or Griff going down, especially as Clarke should be used to get McCarthy or Bennell or even Jetta if we haven't needed to bring him into calculations by then.

Of course, this all relies on us having the biggest recruiting season, in terms of existing talent being traded in, probably in our history and with Bond in charge of it I'm worried - like really worried.

Never liked Walls but he speaks the truth. I'd keep deboer, just like the guys hardness. He is talking a bit of shite re Ballas, he likes a scrap but it's not his fault the umpires can't do their jobs properly. The premise is right though, it's time to bring in some youth and skill.

Id add to the Ballas critique that he falls over too much, lacks poise, gives away too many frees and gets reported too much. Would I keep him, you bet. But Ross needs to do some serious reprogramming on Ballas. Roly has reprogrammed the St Kilda forward Milne into a goal machine so it can be done.

On Zac D, unfortunately I agree. Premiership sides don't have players at full back that cant run, cant rebound, cant mark and cant kick. He does a job but other players have to make up his deficiencies for him and that is only good enough against the bottom 16 sides. Not the top side. To go the next step, we need another backman that forces The Fist out of the backline. At this stage we don't have an automatic starter. That's why we still play him.

I've reviewed the game looking at goals kicked like I usually do.

Ballas was involved in Fremantle's first, second and fifth goals. Yet he cops blame because a Hawthorn player took a dive on the 50m line and Stevic jumped at any opportunity to get the Hawks back in the game. Meanwhile Lake can grab him by the jumper and throw him to the ground and nothing happens. (Lake is a bigger thug than Ballas has ever been.)

Dawson was involved in only one Hawthorn goal. That was the Hawks 10th goal by McEvoy who took a contested mark on Dawson. Dawson got bagged by the commentary for his effort, but on replay, Mzungu and Sutcliffe could have easily came off their men and assisted Dawson as 3rd man up, but they didn't.

For most of the season I have been reviewing the goals of most Freo games. Sutcliffe is involved in way too many of the opposition goals. He is easily evaded (eg. Puopolo Hawks 5th goal & Bruest Hawks 6th goal) and is often seen slowly jogging after a loose man, too late (eg. Brad Hill Hawks 8th goal). In this Final, I saw him poorly defending in 6 of Hawthorn's goals. Before the final series started, I was very concerned of the possible goal costing turnovers Sutcliffe may cause (and to a lesser degree Sheridan).

To those who think Freo need more youth in the team every week, I strongly disagree. The Hawks had one player under 24 years of age and that was Bradley Hill (22), as a forward where he's not going to hurt the team with turnovers (and Billy Hartung as a sub).
Finals are not the place for young players (with undeveloped bodies) not willing to defend hard or who are prone to turnovers. I would have been more comfortable with Duffield. C Pearce, and even Crowley on the field on Friday night.
Youth is fine to have in your squad and in selected games in the Home and Away season to give them experience, but Finals they get found out far too easily.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

Robert Walls has made a career out of kicking a losing side in the guts with cheap shots at players who have no way of shooting back at him. From his playing days through his coaching career and into the media. His article is a cut and paste of every criticism levelled at Freo since Lyon took over the coaching job, and as DK alluded to, never even approached some of the real reasons why Freo lost Friday night. Why has he not criticised the way umpires treat Balla's? Why has he not criticised some of the young players who made mistakes? Why has he praised to of the biggest thugs of 2015 as great leaders? If they were umpired the same way Balla's is they would not have been free to play finals footy. He cut and pasted the story to suit his personal agenda.

Agree with you DK about Duffield in the backline over Sheridan or Sutcliffe, but his cards were numbered weeks out from the finals and will surely be forced into retirement.
Sutcliffe is another of our average blue collar players unlikely to get a game in other good sides and Sheridan although showing signs of improvement his disposal is often suspect.

I dunno why there is so much love for Ballas. He's well past his best footy. He has lost at least a yard or two of pace, slips over more often than not and gets caught, gives away far too many silly frees and his angry ant antics in the face of much bigger opponents just look increasingly puerile. He wants to play Brian Lake footy in a jockey size body, which looks as ridiculous on the field as it sounds here in words.
Trade him now....while he (may) still be worth something. Honestly though, can you think of another team that would trade something valuable for him? If yes, who would want him and what would he be worth?
