TOPIC: Why Pav and Luke should play on

I don't know how anyone reckons Pav is past it! He's been massive for us this season, carrying the tall positions up forward almost single handedly against all odds. His numbers may not be as good as his previous seasons but if you watched the games you'd understand he was easily good enough to lead our forwardline. Put him in a decent structure with the forwards getting a decent shot and he would've kicked 50 goals this year.

Not to mention our run of wet and slippery conditions for 10 consecutive games and the fact his previous numbers were amazing because he is an absolute legend so they were always gonna slide at some point but atm he is still much, MUCH better than anyone else on our list up forward. He has a couple years left and I don't see him retiring this year.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Yep Biz, his injury is listed as a corked leg, so it is not a wear and tear injury. I wonder how much the wet conditions we copped for those 10 games affected the players? I know Shane, anywhere etc, but it seemed to add up over the middle part of the season, and that's when things started to go downhill.

Have often seen Pav double teamed, and even triple teamed. That's how good the opposition believe he still is.

And he's still not too bad in the midfield, with his bulk and strength able to barge through, and long bomb it to
the forwards, and sometimes a goal, from the centre square.

Whatever he decides, we'll always be grateful. For sticking around for one thing.

That all goes for Lukey Mac as well. One of the best Freo has ever had, where ever he played.
Great memories of those flying marks. Even mark of the year back in..? (not sure when)
But thanks so much fellas.

I don't believe Pav was towelled up by Lake in 2013 Grand Final. My memory was that Lake was mostly on Clarke. Clarke then got subbed off and that's when Lake started taking all those marks. I remember Lyon being angry at Mayne. Pav kicked 3 goals. On Friday night I thought he looked really sharp early on the lead. I'm not sure when he got corked but he definitely faded but the delivery wasn't great. I thought that our structure in the forward line was ok but it was our skills that let us down. Really hope he keeps playing particularly if Luke retires.

Seriously it's sad that we're talking about Freo legends like this. If we had drafted properly they would have had young guys around them who they could be mentoring. THEY SHOULD NOT be our No 1 forward and backman at their age and stage of their careers.
Saying that, if we could draft some other decent forwards to take the heat off Pav so he is not the first and only go to marking option in our forward line then we could get another year out of him.
Seeing as he hasn't made a retirement decision, I wonder if this is what he's waiting to see? Some other key forwards drafted?
The load these guys have had to carry just shouldn't have happened.

Luke is gone (sadly), but, absolutely, Pav should play on, especially if we can snag McCarthy or another proven KPF.

Pav leads the club in goal assists, and I reckon that — with all due respect to Walters and Ballas — he can crumb like no other in our forward line. The problem this year hasn't been with Pav, but with our I50 strategy. Bombing it in to the top of the goal square hasn't been Pav's preferred method of delivery for years — especially not when he's being double-teamed. He loves to receive a chest mark on the lead, but our entire attack is built around forcing a stoppage inside 50, because we're the best stoppage team in the comp. It makes sense, as a strategy, but it hardly plays to Pav's strengths.

Maybe it's because he's been hurting and not able to make those leads, I dunno. But if he's got another genuine KPF with him, both to halve the load and to allow him more opportunity to lead (not to mention time in the middle, or leading up the wing), he's still got a hell of a lot to give this club.

Depending on what Pav wants I think he could go one more year. It would depend on what happens on draft week though.

Id love us to think outside the box: play Pav only home games, (regardless of the situations with the ladder) or better still a mini season ie last 12 games. Play him at forward pocket or even better back pocket. Drop The fist and play Pav at full back even. Don't tell me he wouldn't be better than the fist. Or: play him at half back flank ala Hurn. His disposal and decision making would be a killer for the opposition. Lets mix this up and get exciting again.

Alas, Elvis is gone. His kicks lack penetration, no more run and rebound, no more leap and he missed the last three final series I think. Lets remember him as he was: the best centre half back in the land.

CA, and SS, we saw something of what Pav can still do in those early games when he and Tabs were out there together, and Pav was able to get 1 on 1's on a regular basis. With another pre season under his belt, I do believe we will see a stronger player in Tabs next year, add in McCarthy and all of a sudden Pav could be standing the third best defender, and what could that be worth to Freo?. I think Tabs could develop to the stage where he plays instead of Mayne as a taller version of what Mayne does. This could mean Mayne playing as a back in the future.

Obviously it will partly depend on Pavlich's Achilles and also who we do or don't draft may also have a bearing. Lets assume he recovers fully over 6 weeks from his Achilles problems, should he stay on or should he make way, still as our best key forward?

I for one wouldn't mind if he stayed on another year. I don't think I would leave him in the forward line though. We cant afford to go another year without sorting out our long term structure up there. Maybe like the Bulldogs we have to structure up smaller and quicker? Tabs will have to have a crumber at his feet at all times so I think at least one more small crumber.

So that leaves where to play Pav. I wouldn't mind betting that a new position, especially where the guy is not constantly manned up by two opponents, would give Pav a new lease on life and dare I say it, would be FUN. Id like to see in his last year him been given full reign to do what he wanted and run with the ball again. Transition the captaincy from him, play him on the wing, or Centre half back flank ala Hurn or Bob Murphy or even the back pocket.

Imagine his 55m spearing passes to Hill and Son Son streaming off a wing in to our forward line or constantly picking off Mundy down the corridor. Im excited already.

With respect I disagree rhufus. I'd be more than happy for Pav to stay on but I would hate to see him struggle for one season too long. I also can't see him playing anywhere else than as a key forward because he is alot slower and less agile than he was.
I'm actually disappointed McPharlin looks done. 4 weeks ago he looked like he had another season in him for sure but his body went downhill very rapidly and at the absolute worst time. I feel we will miss him more than Pav in coming seasons.
Freo are going to have to manage generational change on a smallish level for a couple of seasons now but I see no reason why it can't be done with us having enough remaining talent to still challenge for the top. If we were to get 2 or 3 of the names being bandied about we could go further next year.

Pav should give it another year if the club can bring in reinforcements to the forward line: McCarthy and Bennell would be handy.
Pav could play home games and a few away games keeping himself fit for finals just for one more crack at the big one.
Is that a feasible arrangement?

While I think that Pav could play on for another year, those suggesting that he only play home games etc. only need to jump in a time machine back to this time last year, when this was the suggested way of saving Luke for another season. Did it happen? No, and it won't with Pav either. These guys are professionals, and are going to want to play every game they can if they commit to their team, and even if the do get every second game off, this only means they will spend more time on the training track to compensate. Pav knows how he is travelling, and he will know when to pull the pin.

RM, I don't think Luke wanted to play every game. Its just that Dawson, Johnno and Silvagni conspired to be injured/suspended for much of the season.
