TOPIC: WHAT I LEARNT: DOCKERS 2015 SEASON

Wharfie Time WHAT I LEARNT: DOCKERS 2015 SEASON 8 years 6 months ago #15

Wharfie Time
I learnt that I should appreciate those home and away games the way I used to.

Walking through Freo after watching an away win with the Mob wearing my purple scarf and feeling a bit silly and a lot proud.

Walking along after a loss still wearing the purple scarf and being encouraged for next week by people doing the same thing.

Catching the train after a home game no matter what the result and feeling I am part of a tribe.

Putting up with the condescension from my Eagles friends and making sure I didn't rub their noses in their situation during their down years because I knew it hurts when people do that (yes I am a nice person - I'm a Docker. Said a few things behind their back though.)

I'm looking forward to 2016 - we will play hard and fair as always and who knows what will happen.

Just one thing - I like our slogan Anyone Anywhere Anytime. Not so keen on Let's Go Freo - sounds like a netball game. But PLEASE don't let the 2016 one be WE BLAME THE UMPIRES....

DK Freo and Hawks had 41 and 42 inside 50's Friday night, that suggests it is something more than the midfield not getting the ball to the forwards, and you have outlined a few reasons for that in previous posts.

SD your point vi) is the best point of the whole thread.

RM, yes, going on season averages for goal conversions, if Hawks have 42 i50s they would normally kick 12 or 13 goals. Freo with 41 i50s would normally kick 10 or 11 goals. Hawks kicked 15.4, well above their normal goal conversion rate.

That often happens if there is, more than normal, frees i50 (yes), set shots from Marks Inside 50 (8 to Hawks, 9 to Freo, no) or a high number of scores from turnovers (9 goals to Hawthorn, yes).
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

i) I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned before... but we actually could have easily lost 9 or 10 games in total for the year (Port @ Subi, Crows, Dogs, GC, Tigers @ MCG)
ii) I am a little concerned about Lachie Neale's development - still racks up possessions but seems to have less of an influence on games compared to last year and earlier this year
iii) Being a newly minted Victorian member, the wins on the road are sweeter than the wins at home (Tigers @ MCG one of the best I can recall on the road)
iv) We truly play Ethihad just as good as Subi - and there nothing to suggest that it can't continue
v) Tabs will develop along with AA Pearce - but they need a long summer in the gym
vi) My confidence is Ballas is at an all-time low and I don't think that will change. Robert Walls is right (I hate to admit it)- for all his huff and puff he doesn't blow enough houses down
vii) Tommy Sheridan is developing better than his critics say. I like the way he takes it on from half back. Although not always the best decision maker he will develop his footy-smarts (and hopefully become Mundy-esque). If he achieves that I think he will actually be quite a damaging player
xiix) Adelaide Oval is the most enjoyable place in Australia to watch footy - it will interesting to see how Burswood will stack up against it
xix) Michael Walters - I've never been so excited to see a player with the footy in his hands since Jeff Farmer. It's a more controlled sense of excitement, however, as it lacks the sheer bedlam and utter hysteria experienced with Jeff.
x) Not that our boys lack effort - but maybe the Toasters winning their prelim is a sting in the tail that will burn all summer and spur the boys on next year.

At the risk of being burnt on here, I learnt (well, had reinforced) that a team's percentage at the end of the year is a better indicator than ladder position.

I see your point DS but it creates a real problem because if there is one thing Fremantle are not known for it's a big percentage.

Despite the fact he's a bit of a reactionary, footballs version of Alan Jones perhaps, Robert Walls pretty much nails where Freo are at for me.

I also really like the part where he says west coast can't win the flag.

Interesting to hear Roly say we are a blue collar team at the presser. We had two top 15 picks playing on Friday night, the Hawks had eleven (I think). West Coast had about ten. Spending time at the bottom of the ladder helps. Becoming a destination of choice is important too. I'd be interested to see a full analysis.

How many of the other 2 teams top picks were drafted by them, and how many traded in?

I can handle the fact that we're not in the GF
I can handle the fact that the Slime are
I think I can handle it if they win (hope I can, anyway)
What I CAN'T handle is that we are now labelled the aggressive supporters who boo

i) At the start of the year, if you have told me that we would finish with the minor premiership, get to the prelims and that Fyfe would win the Brownlow medal, I would have taken it and ran...
ii) At the same time, we really should've gone all the way given where we finished on the table, can't help but to feel like it's a wasted year...still trying to figure out whether my expectations for a flag is unrealistic with our form and our personnel available due to injuries...
iii) Fyfe, you are a bloody ripper, especially after playing with a broken leg...any bigger a man-crush, my lovely wife will start having doubts about my sexuality..
iv) Think it's ok for grown men to shed a tear of 2 if/when Pav and Elvis do announce their retirement, right??
v) Where to from here? Who knows, but I think is for sure, I need a bit of a footy detox, couldn't give a stuff as to who wins this weekend...my wife and I will still be heading to Melbourne on GF weekend, but we will be giving anything footy-related a wide berth, and going to be pretend to be Asian tourists completely oblivious to this strange game with an oval ball...think the money that would've otherwise spent on getting GF tickets will be more wisely spent on wining and dining in Melbourne to celebrate our wedding anniversary...
vi) To my fellow Dockerland folk, thank you for sharing the footy season that was with me. Even though I have never met any of you, it has been fun sharing all the highs and lows together, and reading all the debates that raged on all issues pertaining to our beloved team...almost feel like we should organize a get-together one day to put a face to some of the names here...:) Special thanks to Shane for being admin to this site, and to WTB for starting the "What I learnt" series..

i. We are the best team in the country - in other codes and other countries it is generally agreed that, while any team can win a knock-out competition, it's the best team in the country that wins the league. We did that.
ii. We have the best player in the country - 1st in the umpies vote, 1st in the players vote, 2nd, by only 1 vote, in the coaches vote.
iii. Despite i being true, we can improve.
iv. Despite ii being true, he is only 24 and can also improve.
v. We could see big list changes in the close season - could be 6 retirements, a couple of delistings and 2 or 3 traded out.
vi. Point v should mean we improve - if we get in 2 or 3 of the names we're being linked with.
vii. The combination of points i and vi are quite an exciting prospect
viii. For me to consider a conspiracy I have to identify a clear motive. I can't find one, yet the perceived umpiring bias against us goes way beyond the one-eyed fanaticism of the average sports fan. I'd love to see a genuinely independent analysis of decisions and non-decisions over the course of the season.
ix. This years failure to win the flag hurts more than any previous ones. It was our best chance yet and definitely a lost opportunity.
