I question the wisdom of playing Griffin and Taberner up forward when the combination has barely been tried and certainly never successfully. Tabs had a plain and simple shocker, whilst Griffin only operates well in space. It seems that when the forward line was Tabs, griff and pav, Ballantyne and Walters weren't in it. The ball could hit the ground or go out the back, and instead of remaining in dispute it would end up as an easy hawks clearance.

Kicking to a lead is a problem area for mine. Several times a freo player with the ball would kick it to another freo player running straight at them with a step on their opponents and yet no mark would be taken. That has to be bread and butter for any player in the forward line.

I'm also of the view that while Bond is at the club we will continue to recruit poorly. Our drafting and recruiting has fallen away by a huge degree since Smart left and Bond took over that aspect.

Well past time he was replaced but with the Steves in power, he'll be there for life.

Whats this crap about recruiting Jetta. He is a down hill skier and we don't need him. Bennell and McCarthy on the other hand.....

And can we lobby the AFL for a system whereby clubs can refuse certain umpires? For any game, the club should be able to turn down 2 umps. This in no way reduces the integrity of the system, but it does remove perceptions of bias, and will lead to umpires being more careful not to screw clubs.

I like your thinking.
The rub of the green is a factor to be taken into account.

Great post hypen, and I agree with most.

I think we need some speed and better ball use in the back half. Without Duffman back there, we rely too heavily on MJ to move the ball. When he's restricted, like he was las night, we just don't transition the ball well enough. Bennell would help.

Lyon will have to loosen the reins a little.

Jetta seems to have gone backwards this year, but D Pearce gave us next to nothing in the back end of the year, and we really need some more outside run and carry. Either we get some extra help there, or we have to move Sutcliffe or Sheridan into the midfield.

There's a lot to like about the squad.

Part of the mix for teams like us in '10, Port in '13-'14, Bulldogs and Westicles this year is the fact there was little to no expectation externally (and only wildest dreams internally) of competing for a premiership.

I'd say this really takes a lot of the pressure off and allows them to constantly keep things fresh by trying new things. They also have little forward scrutiny of their playing style by other teams until they're well in form. If Ross has a more experimental frame of mind (whatever passes for experimental with Lyon that is) you'd hope it would lead to a more freer game plan and less mental fatigue if nothing else.

It doesn't necessarily mean you are out of contention in reality.
