Maybe there needs to be a system like international cricket, whereby each country identifies, trains and provides a number of umpires to officiate international games - but not involving their own country?

Why couldn't clubs have umpire recruiting zones to identify and train umpires from the District level upwards and provide the best of the best to a national pool - with the proviso they don't officiate games involving their host club?

One could argue that already exists as Hawthorn provided 3 umpires last night! It's hard to beat 22 but impossible to beat 25.

I saw better umpiring in the District finals this year than was on display last night. You have to ask the question how can such blatant bias be not only tolerated in the second biggest game of the year - but likely to be rewarded with a GF?

But expect all the focus next week in the official AFL umpire review to focus on Tabs errant elbow on Hodge that wasn't paid - the one missed on Walters in the last won't even get a mention.

The tv commentators, at the time the momentum changing frees were paid in the first quarter were very vocal in their criticism of the umpires, by half time they thought the umpiring was fine, and not really influenced by the home town crowd????

As predicted by Morgan, the umps had to over-umpire the game to stamp their authority, and make a concerted effort not to let the crowd affect them.
So, I think the AFL in consultation with the umpires association may need to look at playing Fremantle home games on neutral grounds to avoid such home crowd pressure on the umpires in the future.

I really don't think it would help us much to complain publicly to the AFL about some umpiring conspiracy against us however I do think its time for Freo to take a serious look at this issue. Granted it is only one issue out of about 20 that needs to be looked at in the off season but Rolys subtle "rub of the green" comments and were a no excuses team aren't cutting it if we seriously want to leave no stone unturned.
Freo has to approach this much more cleverly.
There should be a 10 point plan to turn this long term lopsided free kick count around.
They could for instance:
Make much more regular submissions to the umpiring dept asking for explanations. "Can you explain why Ballas was pinged here, and Goldstein wasn't here, we would just like to understand".
Hold education sessions by the umpires to tell our players how not to give away frees.
Invite the umps into the rooms and have them to other social occasions ala the Hawks and other Vic clubs do.
Train our guys in the black arts like head ducking arm lifting and knee bending that the Duckwoods, Shueys and Hams have already mastered.
Intensive training to our hotheads like Ballas, Suban, Sylvani who consistently go in at 110% and give away frees. You know 95% and keeping your feet works a lot better.
Well timed press releases and fan outrage bringing up well researched factual stats on free kicks, one week prior to important Freo games ala the Hawks mentioned they finally lost the free kick count to the Toast the week before they had to come back west. There is always an overcompensation by the umps after something has been brought up.
A video package that is leaked before a big game to say, Fox Footy (in return for some trivial scoop) of Sandilands being scragged incessantly just because he is huge, with headlines "Freo CEO requesting clarification of ruck infringement rules etc etc
Video footage of the Hawks running in sideways off the mark, no 50. Measurements of the 10 m kicks they are always paid.
Start a subtle campaign that can gradually gain legs that each team can request two or three umps who "potentially could be seen as having a conflict of interest" ie Fisher Dalgliesh etc are exempted from Freo games. Just like requesting fixtures each year clubs could put in their umpire requests only you don't get to choose your umps, but you do get to exclude some. This already happens in tennis where players can request a particular umpire doesn't sit at their match.
We have to get cleverer and it cant come from Roly. It has to come from the top brass. we don't need to overdo it but Eddie everywhere always manages to have an expose on Cloke being scragged before a big game and guess what, next week he is inundated with frees.
we need to get more scientific about it. The stats speak for themselves (sorry Morgan). We are the worst in the competition and we have to blame ourselves at least partly. Certainly no one in the AFL cares a hoot so we have to fix this ourselves.

What's with this 'duking it up with Morgan' stuff? He's a great bloke with an even better multi-signature adorned knitted 1995 home jumper. I think Stevic and his lot are a bunch of retards - Morgan is just a bit more circumspect with his comments. No big deal, yeesh.

Clinical, I saw what you saw. I recommend dockerlanders watch that stanza again and the body languare and attitude of the umpires is indeed bizarre and, to my mind, only explained by a bias against the Dockers to the effect that only the Dockers could be the perpetrators.

DK, I really like your idea of the umpiring draw being random. The AFL umpiring department should have some say in it, because they are responsible for the training and development of umpires, and might not want a new ump thrown into a really tough match. But something could be worked out that takes away the power of the VFL to influence results.

And yes, lets also do all the smart things to get the umps onside.

Cheers Polly. But you can't make as many smart-arsey comments as I do, and not expect to cop it when it looks like you're wrong.

And fair dinkum, the umps did a pretty good job of making me look wrong.

Yeah Polly, Morgan & I have different beliefs in regards to the statistics I present regarding Free Kicks, but in general I You Beaut Morgan as much if not more than anyone else on DL.

That is, even though we may disagree on one topic, I hold Morgan's comments in high regard.
I think some critical analysis of any topic is healthy. After all, that is exactly what I am attempting when raising the umpiring bias topic.

And Morgan does not have the copyright on smart arse comments. I plead Guilty your honour.

My brother visited this morning. He doesn't really follow the football, just a glance to see how the WA teams are going. He asked me if I had recovered yet, and I told him I had not. He thought he was consoling me by saying, "Well, at least the Eagles made it and hopefully they'll win next week." When I told him that West Coast winning just compounded my feeling of utter despair, he shook his head and said he couldn't understand Fremantle fans and why we are this way. He thinks I should support the WA teams. I told him WC fans are the same in their feelings towards us, and he disputed this by saying everyone he knows who follows the Eagles wants them to beat Freo when they are playing us, but otherwise want Freo to do well.

Now, I dispute that. Of course I do. We all here know it's not true. The thing is, when I tried to justify my feelings of hatred by talking about umpire bias and media bias and just the general sucky nature of all things Eagles, he just shook his head and proclaimed me a bad sport and a bad supporter. Even as the words were coming out of my mouth, I knew I was sounding paranoid and one-eyed. How can anyone understand who isn't part of the Freo family? Importantly, how am I better able to structure my argument in the future when undoubtedly this topic will come up again? Is it even worth trying to mount a defence or are we always on the losing end of that one because no one wants to see what is all too clear?

My brother is a great guy and of course it was all good-natured between us, but I know he thinks I'm a bad sport. Maybe I am. I kind of don't know any more.

People ask me often why I don't wish WC well as they are from WA. What you say is "the overwhelming majority of football, nay sport supporters support one team. I support one team and wish all others suffer miserable seasons while my team dominates. The notion of supporting both WA teams is a parochial attitude born of an inferiority complex towards the east. I have no such complex."
