My brother visited this morning. He doesn't really follow the football, just a glance to see how the WA teams are going. He asked me if I had recovered yet, and I told him I had not. He thought he was consoling me by saying, "Well, at least the Eagles made it and hopefully they'll win next week." When I told him that West Coast winning just compounded my feeling of utter despair, he shook his head and said he couldn't understand Fremantle fans and why we are this way. He thinks I should support the WA teams. I told him WC fans are the same in their feelings towards us, and he disputed this by saying everyone he knows who follows the Eagles wants them to beat Freo when they are playing us, but otherwise want Freo to do well.
Now, I dispute that. Of course I do. We all here know it's not true. The thing is, when I tried to justify my feelings of hatred by talking about umpire bias and media bias and just the general sucky nature of all things Eagles, he just shook his head and proclaimed me a bad sport and a bad supporter. Even as the words were coming out of my mouth, I knew I was sounding paranoid and one-eyed. How can anyone understand who isn't part of the Freo family? Importantly, how am I better able to structure my argument in the future when undoubtedly this topic will come up again? Is it even worth trying to mount a defence or are we always on the losing end of that one because no one wants to see what is all too clear?
My brother is a great guy and of course it was all good-natured between us, but I know he thinks I'm a bad sport. Maybe I am. I kind of don't know any more.
