why should that make any difference whatsoever? There are umpires who we get regularly and at subi. And we still get screwed.

If these blokes know the hawks game so well, how do they miss the cheap shots they dsih out freely? I guess they don't, they just let them slide.

Jason,

You are correct when you make comments about the umpiring affecting the game and club failing to address this. I disagree with Morgan, completely. The bias shown by the umpires can be explained away in a single game as being overawed by the situation, it cannot be explained away when its the same umpires behaving the same way in every game they umpire. Morgan can pretend all all he likes but facts won't change just because they aren't palatable to some.

Stevic, Rosebury and Dalgliesh have significant previous form and the performance last night was in line with their history. It wasn't a one off.

Another wise man once said that if you ignore the past you will be condemned to repeat it. Well the club has ignored repeated problems in the past and now we are paying for that failure again. When our players get singled out for frees, reports etc we sit back and cop a plea. Other clubs, like the slime, fight it out. They threaten legal action. They attack the AFL head on. Do you see any come back against the slime? Richmond? Collingwood? I guess the burden of all those soft free kicks must be hard to deal with....somehow.

I'm also learning from the past, albeit slowly. Each year I invest several thousand dollars in the AFL and club with my memberships, Foxtel subscription, buying stuff from the club shop. I've decided that I won't put any more money into what I see is a corrupt organisation (AFL) and an organisation that singularly fails in its responsibilities to its members by enabling that conduct.

I clearly acknowledge that neither the AFL nor Freo will be affected or care but that decision will proceed anyway. They can both continue to fail their responsibilities but someone else can be paying for that.

Drubbing, I can cope with getting regularly screwed at Subi, but last night was not our regular screwing, it was special. I am livid that in such an important game they gave us those umpires. They made Margetts look good.

Be that as it may RR, Rosebury's non-call for the holding the man/push it the back to Walter's in the last when we're coming home with a wet sail was inexcusable. He had a clear, unimpeded view from less than 10m away.

If someone has a capacity to use some whizz bang mathematical algorithm to calculate the amount of Wee Poo 'marks' that were under 15m - I'm sure you'd fine that there'd be close to 20 or 30 that would fail that basic test.

That was one of the primary reasons why WC were able to dismantle them because those short kicks were called 'play on' - as they should have been last night. The fact that late in the match when the game was over that the maggots stopped paying these 'marks' only confirms my theory that the fix was on long before a ball was bounced.

RR, yes Rosebury does umpire Hawthorn a lot. Four of our last five matches against Hawthorn have included Rosebury. No surprise to me, we have lost all four of those games, both on the scoreboard and the Free Kicks. We won the other one when he wasn't there. Rosebury has now umpired Freo 8 games in 2015, four times at Subi.

What I don't understand is, in 2014 he umpired 4 West Coast Eagles games (2 at Subi). West Coast lost all 4 of those games. But in 2015, he has had 0 West Coast games.

The prospect of a Derby GF, so tantalising for WA, but not a great $$$ money spinner for the AwFL was always the least preferred option by the vfl variety of football administrators. The chance of a Hawks threepeat instead was the best scenario for the vics.
Well they got what they wished for. How they got it will forever be told as the great Hawks team winning the prelim in one of the most hostile footy territories on earth against the 2015 minor premiers. What actually happened and how the game was adjudicated will not be remembered by most.

So you'd conclude, after that display, that he won't be umpiring next week. But I wouldn't like to bet on it.

Something in that, Rogerrocks. Umpies often reveal they know more about the Melbourne players than ours by being on first-name terms with many of them. I've often thought Friday night games at Subi are when we get the rawest deal: Biggest TV audience, more watching in Victoria, so umps make themselves popular back home by favouring the visitors. That's human nature.
Thought the crowd atmosphere and behaviour was sensational last night, punch-up aside. Is this surge of love and expectation a hindrance to Hill, Mayne and a couple of other guys, sucking all the confidence out of them? Stephen should spend the off-season with somebody who will make him care less. If he just played with more spontaneity and to hell with the consequences - more selfishly and unafraid of stuffing up - he'd be a Charlie contender for sure.

So why does the AFL even "appoint" umpires to games?

If the umpiring was completely transparent and above board, I would think that the umpires should be a virtual lottery draw for each game each week.

I'm sure the AFL can absorb any extra costs associated with sending umpires out of state more often & I accept that come Finals time, the more experienced umpires should get some priority, but we seem to get appointed certain umpires for most of our games.

Docker plus is right on the money. This will be remembered as the Hawks triumphing in the face of adversity and having to travel twice in three weeks (god forbid). Only freo players and supporters will carry the scars of the season. Most others have likely already forgotten. I'm sure the media is already spinning the fairytale story. They have already forgotten the reality as noted by the Mitchell and Fyfe 'running into each other' comment made during the game. This is now their reality.

but not for the faithful. these will be the memories that will come flooding back when it finally is our time. i wont forget. and it will make that ultimate success all the more sweet when it does arrive. Never forget. Never surrender. Glory in the face of adversity is a more profound glory.

Or something like that....

Can't recall which umpire it was but at 3/4 time last night Hodge called him over to the Hawks huddle and pointed out an error he had apparently made. The umpire's hand gesture and general body language at the end of the interaction was as if to say 'thanks for pointing that out Hodgey and sorry I stuffed up. Won't happen again mate'.

Made me sick.

I didn't see it but I imagine that Hodgeyy reminded the ump that whatever had happened had not been what was agreed to before the game.

What I thought was very telling was when griffin hit the post after the siren, and there was a bit of a scuffle as players left the ground, all the umpires puffed up their chests and warned the freo players and not so much hawthorn. When the teams seperated they walked with the hawthorn players looking back at freo like they were part of the team. Absurd.
