...don't worry, Jack. There is glory in the struggle.

Tonight hurt. A lot. I shared it with old friends. Good friends.

We'll wear the cheap shots over the coming days. There's no escaping that. We've been let down, again. There's cause for anger.

But I can turn to those friends, and know we're in this together. I can't see my fellow Dockerlanders, but we all share the same hopes and frustrations. The same hurt.

We'll be back. Not the team - maybe not next year - but the fans. We'll always be back. Suckers the lot of us.

There is glory in the struggle.

Tonight is the first time in a very long time that I spat the dummy, spewed furiously at the TV and didn't like what I saw.

Come tomorrow, I'll watch the Eagles game and won't give a toss either way.

Because that's because I have purple running through my veins through and through.

On yer FREO, thanks for a great year.

The only glory in the struggle, is watching the teams you beat have to do it.

I'm fed up with being on that team - one that fails on the vagaries of fate, bad luck, biased umpiring and poor composure.

What will you be devoting your admirable intellect to this week Morgan?

Defending umpires, game plans or Chris Bond?

Even Morgan, for all his well-reasoned eloquence, can't defend the indefensible.

Gotta admit, i read the umpires debate this week and sat on the sidelines and thought that Morgan contributed some great points well made.
I now refer everyone to exhibit A, the umpiring performance last night. It was scandalous and cannot be defended.
And whilst reflecting on it after the game I found the voice in my head saying "Morgan" in the exact same voice Jerry Seinfeld says "Newman"!

I often wonder if there are people who work for British American Tobacco, or George Brandis, who wake up one day, and wonder: how did I find myself here?

I felt that way about 15 minutes into the first quarter.

In terms of umpiring, there were two things I was worried about before the game (I think I posted this somewhere): that the umps would 'over-umpire' the game to stamp their authority, and that they would make a concerted effort not to let the crowd affect them. Both of those things happened last night, to Freo's detriment. I didn't see the acts that led to the first two Hawks goals, but it smacked of the umpires panicking in a big game. And I swear we lost every 50/50 call. Most will read into that an element of bias. I think you can perform poorly without having an inclination against one team. But we've danced that dance.

Did it cost us the game? Well, it didn't help. But the umpires weren't the only ones who let the occasion get the better of them. Mayne has 150 games as a forward under this belt, and couldn't kick a goal from 20m straight in front. Barlow and Griff missed very gettable goals. There were a lot of blokes who played themselves out of a grand final last night, a couple were in green, but most were in purple. As much as our marketing team have tried to spin it, once again it was the Hawks who 'owned the moment'.

As for Bond and game plans hypen, I'm not up for defending either. A few Freo players were found out last night, but we're going to learn a lot about Bond and Lyon this offseason. We've been close, and both could be defended for only making incremental changes, but the status quo isn't good enough. We'll see if they are capable of adjusting accordingly.

For anyone, like Montrachet, who had me in their head last night, my sincerest apologies. If it's any consolation, being in my own head can be equally annoying.

Morgan, I have always thought your comments well considered and generally very insightful.

I know there were many errors we made that cost us dearly but I cannot accept that the umpiring did not influence the result. However, as no-one at the club whether it's admin, coaching staff or board members appear capable or willing to take the AFL to task over the matter I guess we must accept this as our lot.

I think that is the hardest thing to accept this morning that the respect we should have earned within the AFL through consistent performance and finals appearances appears as far away now as its ever been.

My only consolation is that the worse case scenario of us losing a Derby Grand Final has at least been avoided.

Pav understands what we're going through:

Pavlich reserved most praise for the club’s faithful members and supporters. "They’ve been through a lot as well,” he said. "It was great to see their support again tonight, they were vocal and gave a huge amount of support. They’re hurting as much as we are.”

I always like your contributions Morgan, but I do disagree with your stance on officials.

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark, and still stinks. When WC finest radio barrackers are aghast at it, it must surely stink real bad,

How do the umpires only have bad days and more than their quota of missed calls at our games? I watch other games. They don't seem to perform as badly elsewhere, despite my unemotional involvement in those decision. There's bias going on, and no one either sees it or is interested in doing anything about it.

Had brekky with a die hard Freo supporter this morning, and she pointed out that Roseberry and Stevic umpire hawks a lot, but us only rarely, and that they don't umpire at Subi a lot. So they know hawks style of play, and all their players, hence we get screwed.
