TOPIC: The Bottom 6

It has been noted that our 22 drop off rather quickly. Reckon we could easily identify our bottom six and their lack of input, but you'd be hard put to work out who the Hawks bottom six are.

We overachieved with the squad we have, which says something good about our attitude to hard work.

Look - I admire a lot of things about Ross Lyon, but if you think our list over the past 3 years was ordinary then you are delusional.

And if you think St Kilda had an ordinary list during the Lyon years then you should be committed.

Both very strong squads. But depth would be hard to judge because it was never tested in either case.

Ordinary would be our list without Sandy, Johnson, Pav & Elvis ... maybe that's why I am so depressed.

I don't think Tabener, Dawson, Sutcliffe, Sheridan, Suban, De Boer, Mzungu stack up too well against the Hawks list. Whose place would any of them take?

Nobody said ordinary. These things are all relative.
Hawks 22, pound for pound, has us well covered. We need a top flight marking forward to help Pav for a start.

Beg to differ Flag - in this and several other threads so far people have said we have "overachieved" and Ross has made a "silk purse out of a sow's ear".

What BS.

Not a lot of love for Suban but he would be pushing a game in most sides, and possibly Hawthorns. Their bottom 6 look a lot better because they run outside and get easy touches - like that bloke Hill who "can't play footy", and we passed over. In the right structure, with the right role, players can flourish. But in our structure, guys just grind and grind and grind. Our Hill is better than Smith & their Hill, but they just rack up touches and carry every week because of the hawthorn game plan. I reckon Sheridan & Sutcliffe would look pretty good in that side too.

But also - Hawthorn's list is amazing. So just because we don't match up man for man with them doesn't mean we don't have an exceptional list. Just means you have to find the way to maximise the areas you are better at. Not saying that's easy, but that's why they have coaches, and the players don't just run out and stand in positions all day.

I think we have been unlucky and also made some mistakes. Bottom six might have looked different if:

1. We had of picked up Jack Darling at 20 instead of Jayden Pitt.
2. Morabito's knee was not a repeat offender
3. Taken Brad Hill instead of Alex Forster
4. Josh Simpson had of worked out bit better / received bit more support
5. Taken Elliott Yeo instead of Sylvia
6. Worked out better option on the Gumbleton deal

Personally the Darling / Pitt one I will never get over.

These could have easily worked out better with bit of foresight and admittedly in Mora /Simpson case bit more luck. Hindsight is easy too though I suppose.

The drafting has been appalling and we will pay in the coming years for it but not yet.

Draft performance is best measured at the conclusion of a cycle. We have consistently got the strategy and execution wrong over the past 4 years and that will come to the surface come rebuild time.

Remember that Jack darling was a naughty boy in Year 12 and that it was in the media before the draft? The Dockers might have been worried about his attitude. No matter what he is like off the field, he's been a very useful addition to the Eagles on the field.
It's hard for recruiters to predict the future accurately, but we know we've got some good 'uns to see blossom in coming years.

i think you have it ass about maybe it wasn't the bottom six but some of the top six that under performed. Fyfe injured 211 donut Pav falling over no big mac.

Jack Darling a naughty boy so we better not pick him. Um ah!! Let's pick a weedy little Victorian midfielder instead.

Funnily enough we are keen to get someone who is naughtier than year 12 boy now in Bennell.

I've said it before - bringing football players into a sqiuad is <40% picking the right ones, and >60% developing the ones you've got well.

We need to use our talent better.

Mzungu was freo's best player for the first quarter IMO, actually looked like he was interested in taking the game on. He'll be hung out to dry for not marking that ball at the end; never mind that the kick was a barry, he was 2-on-1, and the bloke that spoiled him contacted his back, arms, and shoulders but was never within a foot of the ball. I feel he'd benefit from consistent game time, because the times he's been dropped he's been far from worst on ground.
De Boer played well last night I feel. His contribution is generally solid without being amazing. I'd take a solid performance over hoping some other bloke fulfills his potential any day of the week.
Taberner had a poor game. He occasionally shows flashes of brilliance but is still not making a ball in the air his own. I reckon he'll come good, but a prelim final is no time for hoping someone plays well.
Dawson is average at best and is good for one goal causing turnover and one goal gifting free per game. A hawthorn forward whose name I've already forgotten outmuscled Dawson like he wasn't even there last night for what will probably be recorded as an uncontested mark. Not good enough.
Suban had instant impact when coming on and should have been put in sooner for mine. His decision making isn't always excellent but he's willing to give it a go no matter what. When he was put on, I wouldn't say for certain that every other freo player out there was willing to give it a go.
