No point. Just wondering what you and others thought of Simpson as a coach-which you've answered.

I and probably everyone/ else here thought their squad was joke but he seems to have done a massive job with what he's got on hand.

I don't think people are calling for Ross to go - simply apportioning responsibility for the performance in light of the way the team has played over the last 6 months.

I don't get why it is OK to blast the players but not criticise the coach? All take some responsibility for the game result - something that Ross said himself last night.

The point I think that is generally being made is that Ross's performance was not perfect - but to respond to this by saying we had a crap list and he is the greatest coach ever is just not correct.

i think we have to be realistic - Ross Lyon is an excellent coach - but possibly his plan and methods mean that he sits as low as 3-4 in the AFL (just my opinion). So when we face another very well coached side with (arguably) a better list, it is going to be a struggle.

But even that is simplistic - there is the whole coaching structure that creates the unit that has to deliver in the big games - and that unit clearly has struggled to deliver against well coached sides with good squads.

So Ross and his staff have to evolve and learn from this - because I don't think they can wring much more out of the players using this plan, and we will (subject to trade miracles) have a weaker list over the next 2 years than we have had for 6 years at least.

Remember 2010? I honestly believed we could beat anyone on our day at the end of that season. I didn't believe that at any point after round 14 this year. Did we have a better list then than now?

After the fast start to the year, I think the numbers (or the interpretation of the numbers) in the sports-science department showed that we couldn't keep up the shock'n'awe attack game.

During the year, the game plan changed to become more conservative energy wise, perhaps that was the plan all along. Remember the talk of 'backing off' when getting far enough ahead?

RTB, says its partly personel, partly style and partly other teams improving their team defense.

I'd like to know if our sport science guys discovered they couldn't keep up the game-style?

If the answer is yes, then we don't appear to be a very good two-speed team. Lots of work to do there.

Hawthorn players seem to be doing the one percent things consistently better: little soccer kicks to advantage, tapping the ball over the back in a marking contest instead of killing it out of bounds, finger tip spoils to a player running on and they seem to be moving more, spreading more. I hate to say it but they look as if they play for each other consistently. The little things seem to work for them regularly. Is it coaching, talent or luck?
Whatever it was, they got away with it last night.

I think its abundantly clear Lyon has gone as far as he can with his current methods and cattle. The players have to be totally fit and in form for his coaching to work. It's too taxing to maintain that. There's been no significant inprovment in our approach or results since 2013. I thought the pre bye game plan had changed that, but they regressed almost as fast afterwards. Because he knows that can't be maintained for a season.

Things have to change. We need to offload good players who currently get games, so they have trade value, get some marking forwards and a more attacking game plan that backs the goalkickers. Even if it's at the expense of some of the defence that Lyon seems determined to build everything around.

You can't mix it with the best trying to be a defensive team that aims to just outscore your opponent. We didn't do it in the first half of the year and the vagaries of the umpiring didn't affect us one iota. We were too busy smashing teams by half time for them to exert any influence.

If Lyon just does what he's always done, he's going to get the results he's always got. And it'll still be ugly to sit through it.

I think we are all overlooking some facts that I and others have been pointing out.
The rub of the green has been against us since about R6 when Dermott decided to mention that we were winning but getting a good deal from the umps.
We have not won a free kick count in any of our last 7 finals, which is far back as I looked.
Stevic, Roseberry and Dalgleish consistently cane us when they umpire our games.
Pretty sure it was Stevic that gave Geelong a free kick and goal before the game had even started in the 2013 QF.
Don't downplay the influence of the umps.
We were shown no respect from them, instead we as a team and supporters were shown contempt
Yes we were loud and rested but we earnt that, and for the umps to equalise with relayed frees to get bthem going was just plain CHEATING

Now the problem for RoLy is that he gets paid win lose or draw so he's not about to buck the system, and he keeps turning the other cheek and now its red raw.
I acknowledge he has a family to provide for so quite frankly its up to THE STEVE's to approach the awfl and say this is crap and its not improving, so we are gonna bring in an independent analyst from far away (that doesnt support any team) and get him to objectively analyse our umpiring decisions both for and against.
We are gonna use that in some form of legal action on behalf of our supporters who may be being stripped of hard earned money, time and emotion that they are entitled to some kind of reward from.
This needs to come from the administration. Roly is good for us, much, much, much better than we've ever had before.

In Ross's post game conference he said that he had to improve and change some parts of his game plan. He is gutted and is the best coach for us.

As I sit here at PCYC in Hilton watching my daughter compete in their State Championships, I've slowly beginning to grasp the concept that it was only a game of footy.

To that end, Roly was not responsible for our forwards missing 3 goals from less than 30m out. If he is true to his word that we need to improve our coaching panel, amoungst other things, then Sumich should be worried. Our mids and backs have performed consistently well over the course of this year but our forward line has failed to fire a shot from the mid-season break.

Whilst some of that can be put down to the quality of talk timber at our disposal, it goes deeper than that.

Securing Leuenbuger via free agency and McCarthy via trades is an absolute must. This draft is considered light on for talent, so give up a Clarke and our next 2 first round draft picks if need be but get him in purple! Tabs is still young and learning his trade so putting some quality around him, even if that just takes the best defender off him, is a must.

The core of our group is around 25 and we have the best player in the comp - notwithstanding he fact he played injured for that last half a season.

But if we don't take advantage now our best chance of a flag will go down with it.

Can't believe the negativity on a coach that has the best win/loss record of any of the coaches. Freo can't kick more goals when the umpires consistently allow illegal holding of our mids and forward line and then pay frees to the opposition in front of goals for ridiculously soft actions that are allowed for all other teams.

They totally influenced the game against us all night at crucial stages.

Personally I think the game plan was OK last night but we made far too many decision and skill errors. Combine that with the lack of a real tall forward and Hawthorn had the edge. Someone smarter than me summed it up by saying our "bottom 6" were far worse than the Hawks.

The umpires were bad but not the reason we lost. We lost because our skill level just isn't good enough and the hawks' is fantastic. That's the difference. If flags were won on sheer effort and desperation we would be chasing a hat-trick, not hawthorn, but until our skills get better we will always be chasing a flag and not getting it.

Hawks skills, like letting the ball fall from their hands when tackled, like sticking the knee into opponents, and the sly elbows, like falling to ground to feceive free kicks in marking contests, like holding opponents without the ball, and pusing them full in the back, and riding them to the ground. You are right . It wasn't the umpires that killed us off, it was the Hawks skill levels. YEAH RIGHT...
