I've said it a number of times about RL and specifically in relation to Hawthorn games but he has no back up plan. All night the Hawks have had it easy out of the backline because they are allowed space and time to dispose of the footy due to having extra numbers there. It is not of the Hawks design but RL's as he positions at least one player behind the ball at all times.

It means Hawthorn have an extra player to find at all times when picking apart our defense and their entire strategy is based on retaining possession of the footy and not turning it over with superior kicking skills. As such the Hawks take possession of the footy and rarely lose it going forward which is exasperated by us being undermanned up forward and unable to capitalise on any forward rebounds as we are far outnumbered.

It is a good strategy against poor sides who lack the kicking skills to pierce the large numbers in defence but when we come up against the elite kicks of the competition we struggle massively and rely on our strong ability out of the middle to win clearances. Against good sides it puts us behind the 8 ball and struggling to catch up.

It's simply not good enough and his strategies have not improved at all since he took over as coach. We have the talent but it's not being used well.

Execution was the problem. Kick two gimme goals and don't give two to Rioli and we would have won from there, although the umps would have stepped in again probably.

Lyon is low on the list to blame IMO.

Just for once I'd like to see him question the poor umpiring decisions that affected us in the first quarter. Not the difference in the game but certainly changed the momentum. I'm sick of us taking it. Nothing changes.
Hardwick spoke up after a clanger and we always have a go at the Scott brothers but at least they speak up.

I'm not saying RL is purely to blame or anything of the sort. I'm saying the strategy of giving the Hawks free reign of the footy is a mistake that RL refuses to learn. The umps made two huge momentum shifting calls in the first qtr that hurt us but we should easily have accounted for the Hawks after a break and home ground advantage. There's no way we should lose this game with the quality of players in the side if left alone to go up against the Hawks.

We kill every side in the clearances and have the likes of Pav, Son Son and Ballas in attack. It shouldn't even be a contest let alone this bad of a loss.

Lyon couldnt counter the hawks possesion and ball movement game. You have to break that down if you're going ot beat them. We didn't pressure and deny them space to play their own game

I think RoLy makes the most of a limited list. There are half a dozen of our best 22 that wouldn't get a game with the Hawks: ZeD, Sheridan, Sutcliffe...
Our recruiting has let the team down. RoLy has done his best to make a silk purse out of a sows ear. An average list has regularly played finals, I'm not sure what else he could do.
That said, he stuffed up by not going a hard tag on Mitchell.

Lyon is a Neesham clone, an extremist. Forget that one is attacking and one is defensive, that is not relevant.

Neither of them address both sides of the coin; striking a balance between attack and defense. The other common trait is an unshakable faith in a game plan that takes precedence over recognition for the need of top line players.

Well football is 80% about talent, sorry but it is.

Lyon needs to change some things and Bond must go. I like Lyon and i loved Neesham but the flag is proving elusive.
